This year the AWY has teamed up with She of the sea to hold a free event for female crew, as well as shorebased women.
The Shore Future Forum will provide current and ex yacht crew with an opportunity to hear from other women who have come ashore, and how they’ve found employment or started their own business.
They’ll be sharing their journeys, alongside panellists who can offer advice on what large yachting companies are looking for in ex-yacht crew as potential employees.
The panel session will be followed by the usual AWY networking event, for professional shorebased women to network and connect with each other. This will take place on the roof terrace of the IHO building, with fabulous views of Monaco port.
The Shore Future Forum is sponsored by Tidal Yachting and supported by Yachting Pages Media Group & JPMA (John Percival Marine Associates)
Tickets are available through eventbrite. Note that different ticket types are available, so if you want to attend both parts of the event, you will need to book both types of ticket.

Hydrographers produce information that directly affects our daily lives, but we seldom see it. Hydrography enables the exploration of gas, oil, and minerals, construction of ports and alternative energy sites, laying of communication cables and pipelines, the establishment of aquaculture farms, optimization of shipping routes, dredging of navigation channels, and preparation and response to natural disasters, to mention just a few.
USM School of Ocean Science and Engineering's Hydrography Masters Program is 1 of 3 in North America that the International Board recognizes on Standards of Competence for Hydrographic Surveyors and Nautical Cartographers for technical professionals. Also, in 2013 the IHO selected USM to educate hydrographers from developing nations.

Hydrography drives marine knowledge & provides baseline information for all seaborne activities.

Can S-100 support development?
IHO Director Abri Kampfer highlighted in his speech at the 31th International Cartographic Conference (ICC 2023) how smart cartography can be used to support a wide range of initiatives including managing resources, protecting marine ecosystems, planning and developing coastal communities, responding to etc.
With the S-100 Universal Hydrographic Data Model, the IHO is developing a versatile standard framework for datasets to describe specific aspects of the real environment. These datasets are mutually compatible and interoperable, which in turn supports a multitude of possible combinations of the geo-information encoded in datasets – independent from which science domain they belong to. An all-embracing digital model for all kind of marine geoinformation based on IHO´s S-100 framework will allow fully interoperable datastreams to feed evolving technology for the benefit of the marine .
Organised by the South African National Committee for ICA, the theme for this year’s conference is “Smart Cartography for Sustainable Development” and is being held in Cape Town, South Africa from the 13th to 18th August 2023.

The UN-GGIM Committee of Experts endorsed the Operational Framework for Integrated Information Management (UN-IGIF-Hydro) Part Two and adopted parts one and two as the complete UN-IGIF-Hydro during the 13th session of the UN-GGIM Committee of Experts meeting at UN Headquarters in New York last week.
📌 The UN-IGIF-Hydro aims to ensure the inclusion of the domain in the larger information and is intended to be used by both developing and established geospatial programmes which wish to implement the UN-IGIF Strategic Pathways in the marine domain. It will play a key role in ensuring on the is integrated, authoritative, and readily accessible and as such the framework has been endorsed as an action of the Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (UN Ocean Decade).
The UN-IGIF-Hydro framework recognizes and as important contributors to other geospatial domains.
The complete UN-IGIF-Hydro represents several years of collaboration, global engagement, and dedication by the UN-GGIM Working Group on Marine Geospatial Information that included a three month global consultation review process, the drafting of a White Paper, several rounds of drafting group meetings, and two test workshops.
The UN-IGIF-Hydro is a living document that the Working Group will continue to maintain and provide guidance on for those who intend to implement it.
The IHO was represented by Dr John Nyberg, Director Elect of the Technical Programme who will enter into his functions on 1 September 2023.

Happy World Hydrography Day!
Please join us in celebrating the day by listening to this message from Dr Mathias Jonas, IHO Secretary-General.
Tomorrow is World Hydrography Day!
Hydrography provides the necessary data to feed the digital twin of the ocean. Highlighting how important this is, the global hydrographic community gathered in Monaco in May to discuss how hydrography can play a key role in providing data that leads to more informed decision making.
Listen to what they have to say.
Why is hydrography important for Pacific Small Island Developing States?
What is hydrographic data used for?
As World Hydrography Day approaches (Wednesday 21 June), we thought it would be a good time to raise awareness regarding the importance of hydrography for this particular region.
In this video, Fiji's national hydrographer, Jervis M. Robinson, answers both questions and highlights the role hydrography plays in improved knowledge of the seas and ocean in his country.

Do you know someone who would like to gain practical experience with maritime data products?
IC-ENC is offering a secondment to a female candidate to lead on a continuous improvement project relating to the IC-ENC Knowledgebase as part of the IHO’s Empowering Women in Hydrography project. The IC-ENC Knowledgebase is a key resource for Members which provides a database of over 2,300 validation software error messages which is maintained on a regular basis.
Candidates should have experience working in the field of hydrography as well as with ENCs and validation. This project will build leadership, project management and analytical skills.
Information about the opportunity as well as how to apply is on the EWH website: https://iho.int/en/project-activities

The shape of the influences a variety of processes such as currents and ocean circulation, and also provides habitats for marine species.
On this , we celebrate all the people working in around the world who are helping increase our knowledge of the oceans and are supporting their sustainable use.
Happy !

➡️The IHO universal hydrographic data model, S-100 can help increase data interoperability and usability.
S-100 was initially born to take ECDIS to the next level of digital technology. However S-100 is not limited to surface . The S-100 framework can integrate all relevant categories of data to support the full ocean stakeholder community.
With better data, we could see a “Digital twin of the navigable waters” which would allow users to simulate various scenarios by tuning different parameters.

Representatives of the International Hydrographic Organization Member States, observers, and private sector partners gathered in Monaco to discuss new developments in technical standards, and agree on resolutions to guide activities. Key decisions this year included the future of nautical charts and steps to ensure the ongoing transition to products and services.
Countries also approved the resolution recognizing the existence of the around and setting its geographic limit.

With the signing of this MoU, both parties are reaffirming their commitment to the international community through this key element of the global data infrastructure.
Ocean depth data is used to generate a precise image of the , including features such as canyons, seamounts, volcanoes etc. These physical elements have an impact on a variety of ocean processes like currents and ocean circulation as well as for species. Ultimately, better data on the seabed helps improve models, refine initiatives to protect or address , and generally speaking, supports informed decision-making.
Dr. Rick Spinrad, NOAA Administrator and Under Secretary of Commerce for Oceans and Atmosphere, and IHO Secretary General Dr. Mathias Jonas signed the MoU.
