The final Community Health Assessment projects by the Diploma in Nursing 2021 intake students took place on the 20th of July 2021 at Paray School of Nursing (Paray SoN). This year, because of the Covid-19 restrictions, the community assessment was conducted differently. Over the past three years, first-year students worked in groups to assess the health status of Thaba Tseka communities. However, this year students worked individually with their home communities away from Paray SoN and this strategy amplified the student-centeredness. Seven out of ten districts of Lesotho benefited from the fruits of the Competency-Based Education implemented at Paray SoN. The school management would like to express their gratitude to the Chiefs, student supporters and communities that collaborated with the students during their projects. Kudos to the students and their supervisors for such a milestone!!!!!๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘

Paray SoN like many other institutions of higher learning globally has not been spared by the lockdown decisions that came as a recommendation from WHO in a bid to combat the spread of the disease. The easing of the lockdown restrictions saw Paray opening its doors for students using a phased approach guided by the NACOSEC guidelines for higher education institutions.

Senior Students:
Third year Nursing and Midwifery students returned to school on 7 September for a two-week consolidation and conclusion of their modules. The students were quarantined for a period of 14 days during which they were undergoing daily screening for Covid-19 symptoms at the school clinic. Teaching and learning continued online. Students continued to observe the Covid-19 precautionary measures. At the end of the 14 days, students had their revision week in preparation for examinations. Examinations were conducted still observing the Covid-19 precautionary measures. Students attended simulation sessions in groups to enhance their skills before they could go for clinical placement.

Junior Students:
Subsequently the junior students, namely the Diploma in nursing year one and two and the certificate in nursing assistant students, returned at the beginning of the fifth week after the opening of the school. The same Covid-19 precautionary measures were followed with these students. Their strict 14-day quarantine period ended on 17 October 2020. Currently they are in their first week of time limited face-to-face engagement with their module facilitators.
Sessions are allocated a maximum of an hour interrupted with 5-minute breaks in 30 minutes. In the classrooms precautionary Covid-19 measures are still being observed.
Supplementary online classes are still going on after the face to face sessions. Studentsโ€™ use of the library is on an appointment with the librarian basis.

Covid-19 Prevention measures:
Scheduled screening continues for students and staff as a precautionary Covid-19 prevention measure. Orientation workshops on covid-19 for staff and students were done
All visitors to the institution are screened for Covid-19 prior to accessing services.
