President Weah Makes Appointment at LAA, Dismisses its Technical Services Director
President George Weah, has made appointments at the Liberia Airport Authority (LAA) and, at the same time, effecting a dismissal at the entity.
The President, on September 14, 2022 re-nominated Mr. Musa Shannon as Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Liberia Airport Authority and Mr. Akoi Sowogie as Acting Deputy Managing Director for Technical Services.
Prior to Mr. Shannon renomination, President Weah has mandated him to take charge of the tasks and functional responsibilities of that office pending his confirmation by the Honorable Liberian Senate when it reconvenes.
Additionally, Dr. Weah expressed hope that Mr. Sowogie will justify the confidence he has reposed in him.
Meanwhile, President Weah has dismissed, with immediate effect, Madam Paula Fares Harvey, Deputy Managing Director for Technical Services of the LAA for administrative reasons.
He thanked Madam Harvey for her service to the entity.

Pres. Weah Suspends Designated Officials
President George Weah has received with serious concern, a recent United States Treasury Department report which designates three of his officials for specialized sanctions under the Global Magnitsky Act.
President Weah views the allegations against the officials contained in the report as grave.
In view of this, President George Manneh Weah has suspended the named officials, Minister of State Nathaniel McGill, the Managing Director of the National Port Authority Bill Twehway, and Solicitor General Seyma Serenius Cyphus with immediate effect to enable them to face investigation.
The President has also designated the principal deputies of the suspended officials to act in their stead.

CENTRAL OF BANK OF LIBERIA CLARIFIES...
The Central Bank of Liberia (CBL) says it is only minting coins in L$5 and L$10 contrary to speculations that it is minting L$30 and L$25.
The CBL in a statement issued Friday, August 12, said its move is consistent with May 6, 2021, Joint Resolution of the National Legislature authorizing the Central Bank of Liberia (CBL) to print and mint the new family of Liberian currency totaling L$48.734 billion.
CBL explained that delivery of the coins will begin in the 4th quarter of 2022 and infused into the economy through the commercial banks.
It stated that new coins are smaller, much lighter, and easier to carry than the previous coins in circulation. The minted coins are round, nickel-plated steel, with the L$5 weighing 3.6 grams and the L$10 weighing 4.8 grams. The L$5 has the image of President Edward James Roye, while the L$10 has the image of President Joseph Jenkins Roberts.
The L$5 and L$10 coins, are part of the new family of Liberian dollar currency, with the rest of the new currency being the L$20, L$50, L$100, L$500 and the L$1,000 banknotes. The L$1000 is being introduced into the Liberian economy for the first time.
The Bank reassures the public that the currency reform is well on course and proceeding according to the implementation plan. Meanwhile, the Bank noted that it will soon launch a nationwide public education and sensitization campaign on the currency replacement exercise.

Report says, Archbishop Emeritus of the Catholic Church of Liberia, Lewis Jerome Zeigler has died.
According to sources, he died on Friday August 12, 2022 at the Catholic Hospital in Monrovia.
He has been battling illness for a protracted period.

OK FM is reporting that the home of the current Chairman of the Unity Party, Rev. Luther Tarpeh in Paynesville was gutted by fire leaving several of his assets destroyed.
One of his children is under critical condition.
The cause of the fire is still unknown.
But supporters have reportedly termed the action as an arson attack.

President Weah Appoints Cllr. Bernard Chairperson of Ad-Hoc Pre-Selection Committee of LACC Commissioners
Monrovia, Liberia - The President of the Republic, H.E. Dr. George Manneh Weah, has appointed Cllr. Archibald Bernard as chairperson of an Ad-hoc Committee charged with the responsibility to pre-select candidates to serve as Commissioners of the amended Liberia Anti-corruption Commission (LACC).
Cllr. Bernard’s appointment by the President is consistent with Section 6.10 of the Act to Amend and Restate An Act to Establish the Liberia Anti-Corruption Commission and to Re-establish the LACC. The new Act empowers the President to carry out pre-selection of candidates for the position of commissioner.
President Weah has mandated the Ad-Hoc Committee to submit the list of candidates to his office within thirty-five working days from the deadline for submission of applications.
The Act also provides that the Ad-hoc Committee shall be composed of nine (9) persons, a Chairperson appointed by the President of Liberia, and the eight others (one each) from the General Auditing Commission, the Governance Commission, the Liberian National Bar Association, the Press Union of Liberia, and the Liberia Business Association.
Others include the anti-corruption advocate of the Civil Society Organization, the Liberia Institute of Certified Public Accountants, and the international donor community which provides technical assistance to Liberia in the area of prevention of and combatting corruption.
The Chief Executive insists that persons elected to the Committee must possess impeccable business and professional reputation, high moral values and qualities, excellent public reputation, and must never have been convicted of any crime.
The Act also states that the Ad-hoc Committee shall pre-select two (2) candidates for each Commissioner position and submit said list of candidates to the President of Liberia for his nomination to the Liberian Senate for confirmation.

President Weah Signs Into Law Iconic Bills, Including the Dual Citizenship Law
Monrovia, Liberia - The President of the Republic, H.E. Dr. George Manneh Weah, has set yet another first-time-in-history record with the signing into law of several iconic bills towards spurring national inclusiveness and the fight against graft and corruption in the country.
The Bills enacted into law as of the President’s signature appended, include Dual Citizenship, which many political regimes before him shrugged despite public outcries about their discriminatory natures. The President signed into law the Alien and Nationality Law relating to Citizenship and Restoring the Citizenship Rights Lost As A Consequence of erstwhile Legal Provisions.
The Dual Citizenship Bill signed by the President allows Liberians in the Diaspora to remain citizens after acquiring another nationality.
Also, the Bill states that those having dual citizenship status will however be barred from serving as president, minister of finance, central bank governor, or holding high-level positions in the national security or law enforcement sector.
Another historic Act is the Revenue Sharing Law of Liberia promoting decentralization and economic inclusiveness across the country.
He also signed into law the Act to Establish the Liberia Anti-Corruption Commission and to Re-establish the Liberia Anti-Corruption Commission, Financial Intelligence Agency Act, and the Anti-Money Laundering, Terrorist Financing, Preventive Measures, and Proceeds of Crimes Act, An Act to protect witnesses to be Known as Witness Protection Act of 2021 as well as the Act to Protect Whistleblower Act of 2021 (July 29).
The Bills signed by President Weah at different time intervals between June and July 2022 are intended to provide adequate legal leverages and perimeters in line with the changing developments in the governance process of the country.
Additionally, the Bills are consistent with President Weah’s legal reform initiatives aimed at complementing the government’s development agenda.
Others include An Act to ratify the Amendment to the Financing Agreement - Tree Crops Extension Project II (ICEP) between Liberia and the International Monetary Fund for Agricultural Development, An Act to ratify the loan agreement between the Republic of Liberia and the African Development Fund (Special Agro-Industrial Processing Zone Project, An Act to Amend the Executive Law of Liberia and to Establish the Liberia Standards Authority, and An Act to Ratify the Financing Agreement (Investment, Finance and Trade Project) Between Republic of Liberia and International Development Association.
Also signed into law by President Weah is An Act to ratify the Investment and Incentive Agreement between the Republic of Liberia and Liberty Investment Limited, An Act to Amend the Public Law to Establish the National Center for the Coordination of Response Mechanism, and An Act to Amend sub-sections 1,2(Q), 1,3,5, 1,4,3, 1,8,6,7,2 and 22.214.171.124 of An Act to further amend part I (The business) Corporation Act) and Part III (Partnership and Limited Partnership Acts) of the Association Law, Title 5, Liberian Codes of Law Revised.
The Liberian Chief Executive also signed the Act to Approve the Restatement National Budget for Fiscal 2022 to provide for the expenditure of the Government of Liberia, an Act to Amend and Restate Chapter 30: Partnership of the Associations Law, Title 5, Liberian Code of Laws Revised, an Act to amend and restate Chapter 31: Limited partnerships, of the Associations Law, Title 5, Liberian Code of Laws Revised, Act to amend and restate Chapter 3: preferred ship mortgages and Maritime Liens on Liberian Vessels, of the Liberian Maritime, Title 21, Liberian Code of Law Revised, and the Act to Amend Section 10.2, 10.4 and 10.6 of Chapter 10 of the Criminal Procedure Law, Title 2 Liberian Code of Law Revised, to provide conditions for time off, and Authority to arrest.
Also signed into law is an Amendment to Chapter 16 of the Criminal Procedure Law to Provide for Plea Bargaining, an Act to amend section 36 of the Judiciary Law Title 17 of the Liberian Code of Laws Revised to provide for the Appointment of Additional Relieving Judges for the Circuit Courts, An Act to Ratify the Agreement for the Encouragement and Protection of Investment between the Republic of Liberia and the OPEC Fund for International Development (OFID) and an Act to Amend Section 12.1 and 12.2 of Chapter 12 of the Criminal Procedure Law Title 2, Liberian Code of Laws Revised, to and provide for a new Standard on Preliminary Examination in Cases above the Tribal Jurisdiction of Magistrates Justice of Peace.

Ambassador Michael McCarthy Reaffirms US Government's Support to Liberia's Infrastructural Sector, Pays Courtesy Call on Authorities at the Ministry of Public Works
US Ambassador accredited near Monrovia, Michael McCarthy has pleadged his government's unwavering support to the Infrastructural Sector of Liberia, mainly in the area of roads connectivity.
Ambassador McCarthy spoke on Wednesday in a high-level Technical Meeting with Public Works Minister Ruth Coker-Collins and a host of other Ministers.
The Meeting, amongst many things, focused on challenges the Ministry of Public Works is beset with, as well as the reintroduction of the USAID Funded Feeder Road Projects.
According to the US Envoy, plans are underway for American-owned Construction Companies to contribute towards Liberia's Road Development and Transport Facilitation Programs.
Ambassador McCarthy also used the occasion to reaffirmed the US Government's Partnership with Liberia aimed at ensuring that Liberia prospers, leveraging available resources.
For her part, Public Works Minister Ruth Coker-Collins lauded Ambassador McCarthy for the visit, terming it a historic one.
The Liberian Works Minister said the Government of Liberia through the Ministry of Public of Works remains grateful to the US Government for the level of engagement, adding that a concerted effort and/or partnership is crucial towards the improvement of infrastructures in the country.

A prominent Liberian based in the United States, Patrick Sowah is calling on the Government of Liberia to invest in mental health.
His call comes following media report that one Roland Garjay urged the government to swiftly get off the streets a mentally disordered fellow, only identified as Armstrong.
Armstrong is usually seen in the streets, mainly around the Duala Market area terrorizing peaceful citizens.
According to Sowah, there are many strategies in helping people who are mentally ill, adding that the environment of mentally ill citizens should be changed by the National Government; something he believes needs the collective efforts of every citizen.
The former President of the University of Liberia Student Union is at the same time calling on the Government to provide areas where mentally disordered citizens will be taken for proper care and medication.
Sowah believes that if such is not done as soon as possible, he might cause bigger problems for residents.
He however expressed great concern over where Armstrong would be kept should he be taken off the streets.
Patrick Sowah who currently works as an outpatient circle therapist, has availed himself to partner with the management of Bana FM with the aimed of getting Armstrong from the streets in spite of the many challenges in doing so.

In Grand Cape Mount County, several persons have been seriously wounded following a tragic motor accident involving an NTA Bus.
Report says, the accident took place in the evening hours of Saturday along the Kinjor- Jenneh Brown high way in Gola Konneh District.

Cummings describes as completely disappointing the cross over of Grand Cape Mount County Senator Simeon Taylor to the ruling CDC.
ANC Political Leader, Alexander Cummings has expressed dismay over the return of Grand Cape Mount County Senator Simeon Taylor to the ruling Coalition for Democratic Change.
Senator Taylor who left the CDC and ran on the ticket of the once formidable opposition bloc Collaborating Political Parties and won the senatorial seat in Grand Cape Mount County in 2020.
Following months of legal battle with former Senator Victor Watson of the CDC, he still won the seat with the backing of the CPP.
At a major press conference held Monday, at his residence in Congo Town, Cummings said he is deeply disappointed over the action of Senator Taylor joining the CDC.

Cllr. Martin said those officials acted against the laws in the discharge of their duties.
