Have you heard about the Kissi penny?

It was not the brainchild of a single individual but was produced collectively by native Kissi blacksmiths, known as "Sumda", in the late 1800s. The currency was a traditional form of money developed and used by several ethnic groups in West Africa, primarily the Kissi, Gbandi, Loma, and Bandi peoples, in the regions that are now Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Guinea.

Origin and Production

Collective Creation: The iron rods were crafted by skilled blacksmiths within the community, using iron smelted from local ore deposits. The design was a standardized form of value that evolved within the local culture over time, rather than a single invention by an individual.

Timeframe: While iron as a trading good had been used for centuries (Portuguese records mention iron bars in the 16th century), the specific form known as the Kissi penny is believed to have been "minted" and circulated widely from around the 1880s onward.

Design and Value: Each penny was a twisted iron rod, typically ranging from 6 to 16 inches long, featuring a "T" shape on one end ("ear") and a flat, hoe-like blade on the other ("foot"). The longer pieces held higher value. The odd shape was thought to prevent tampering with the metal content.

Cultural Significance

The Kissi penny was not just a currency; it held significant cultural and spiritual importance, often referred to as "money with a soul". If a penny accidentally broke, it lost its value and could only be restored to circulation through a special ceremony performed by a traditional witchdoctor or the blacksmith, who would rejoin the pieces and symbolically restore its "soul". It was also used in important ceremonies, such as weddings and funerals, where it was believed to help transport the soul of the deceased back to their home village.
