America’s Tariff Decision and the Sri Lankan Economy… My Perspective…
In Sri Lanka’s economy, the United States is the main export market. Nearly 24% of Sri Lanka’s total exports go to the U.S.
This accounts for a major portion of Sri Lanka’s foreign exchange (USD) earnings from exports. Although the economic collapse in recent fiscal years was partly due to the impact of COVID-19, the primary reason for the severe crisis was the shortage of foreign reserves – that is, the lack of sufficient foreign currency. Unable to compensate for this, Sri Lanka had no choice but to seek help from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for U.S. dollars.
Support from the IMF (through financial aid) and a change in government have helped stabilize Sri Lanka’s economy over the past two years… and continue to do so.
What’s rather ironic here is that Sri Lanka’s current economy is not a "growing economy," but rather a "recovering economy." There’s a difference between the two… In fact, we haven't even reached the economic growth levels we had in 2018 — that’s the harsh truth.
In such a fragile economic state, the recent action taken by the current U.S. President is like rubbing salt into an open wound…
Once again, America has reminded the world that it is a democratic nation built on pure capitalist economic policies.
And what was the event? A rather special one…
President Donald Trump has announced that a 44% tariff will be imposed on Sri Lankan goods, effective from April 5, 2025.
I see this as a massive economic blow to Sri Lanka. As a recovering nation, this decision will reduce demand for Sri Lankan products in U.S. markets and turn Sri Lanka into a less competitive player in the global export scene. It will undoubtedly have serious negative economic consequences for the country.
For small nations like ours, who rely heavily on the U.S., this event feels like a cruel strike on a growing wound.
This is the nature of capitalism… From an economic standpoint, the decision taken by the President may be right for America…
How Sri Lanka is going to face this — we’ll have to wait and see. But I believe we will rise again.
Thank you,
