​The Saw-scaled Viper (𝘌𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘤𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘢𝘵𝘶𝘴) is a master of the dry zone landscapes of Sri Lanka. Despite its relatively small size, it is famously one of the "Big Four" medically important venomous snakes in South Asia.

​Its name comes from the way it rubs its specially shaped, keeled scales together to create a loud, sizzling warning sound—a "hiss" produced by the body rather than the throat. In this shot, you can clearly see those rough, serrated scales and the vertical pupil that marks it as a nocturnal predator.

​The 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝗥𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗿 is famous for its incredible "rolling" flight displays during the breeding season, but even at rest, they are a sight to behold. While they look relatively modest when perched, their wings reveal a hidden explosion of turquoise and deep indigo once they take flight.
​Found frequently in open grasslands and scrub jungles, they are the ultimate watchful sentinels of the field.
