This World Environment Day, we are excited to announce that we are launching an agroforestry model in Rilhena in collaboration with Kahawatte Plantations and Agriculture Innovation Nucleus in Sri Lanka! This is the latest among a host of green restoration initiatives that include our flagship project of building a Biodiversity Corridor through an abandoned tea land to link two separated forest reserves.
Our green initiatives align with Sri Lanka's NDC of restoring forest cover by 32% and the global call to restore 1 billion hectares by 2030.
We believe the success of this model will pave the way to extend agroforestry to our other tea estates. The transition from monoculture will have many benefits such as enhancing biodiversity, crop yield, water management, resistance to pests and diseases, soil health and climate resilience. Apart from planting forest trees, we are also planning to establish cash crops such as durians, rambutans, garcinia, and pepper at the site.

As managing trustee of the MJF Foundation - The Merrill J. Fernando Charitable Foundation and Director of Dilmah Conservation , his role extends to using a minimum of 15% of the pre-tax profits from Dilmah & MJF Group companies to benefit people and nature. Mr. Fernando played a key role in establishing Dilmah Conservation in 2007 and built on its successes with the creation of Biodiversity Sri Lanka - the country’s leading body for biodiversity and conservation.

We have some exciting news from our Bee A Keeper project! We've been buzzing with anticipation to expand our efforts to the East, and guess what? – Turns out, the East has ideal conditions for beekeeping.
Our sustainable beekeeping training sessions in the community of Kalkudah have been met with eagerness. Fast forward to May and we are distributing bee boxes so that people like Selliah Navamani (35) and T. Jeevanandarajah (31) can begin beekeeping sustainably.
And that's not all – we're spreading the buzz about sustainable wild bee harvesting. By training wild bee harvesters in eco-friendly methods, we're ensuring that both the trees and the hives are left unharmed during honey collection.
Dilmah’s Bee A Keeper project aims to uplift rural communities by introducing sustainable beekeeping in Endane, Kalkudah and Nawalapitiya through training and workshops, capacity building and bee research.
