June saw another high turnout for the monthly SLAPS quiz at the Yacht Club. Thanks to everyone who attended; we are happy you had a good time. Best of all, we raised funds to help SLAPS continue its work. We no longer have a facility to house dogs but we are still paying for veterinary care plus feeding strays.
The opening round was about birds. Sample question: Which species of bird can fly backwards? (See below for the answer.)
We then devoted a round to countries that have experienced a name change, for example: Give the immediate former name of Sri Lanka.
The round on the Caribbean included unusual questions such as: Which celebrity founded a rehab centre in Antigua?
Our final text round was on origins. Sample: In which country was the Hawaiian pizza invented?
Congratulations to the winning team, ‘Who Are We? 2’. They were delighted to each receive the prize of a bottle of wine, kindly donated by The Marketplace in Rodney Bay Marina.
We thank quizmaster Vince for delivering the questions, answers and scores. We are grateful to Impy and staff at the Yacht Club for attending to the food and drinks orders. Many thanks to the SLAPS volunteers who worked hard preparing the quiz, and on the night.
The answers to the questions above are:
1. Hummingbird
2. Ceylon
3. Eric Clapton
4. Canada
The next quiz will be on Tuesday 7th July. The quiz is a popular event so please book your table several days in advance by contacting Impy on 714 4824. Please also bring pens to fill in the answer sheets, and come prepared with a team name.
SLAPS thanks everyone who supports the monthly quiz. We are especially grateful to the snowbirds who pay the entrance fee even though they are not on-island.
See you on 7th July!

Quizzlers! It is your time to shine!
SLAPS thanks the supporters who attended the Yacht Club on Tuesday for the May quiz. Even though the snowbirds have migrated back north, there was still an excellent turn-out. Players had a fun evening and we raised funds to help SLAPS continue its work. Last month this included several thousand dollars paid for a dog to have his leg amputated, so he would have mobility with three legs, rather than being permanently hindered by the badly injured leg.
The opening round was about elephants, and Team ‘Who Are We?’had a great start by answering all 10 questions correctly. Sample: What is the name for the female elephant who leads the herd? (See below for the answer.)
A round on food/drink is always popular so that was our next choice. Do you know the main ingredient of the dish Zarzuela?
The May quiz was deferred a week by the Jazz and Arts Festival so we thought it fitting to include a music round, specifically on one-hit wonders. Can you name the artiste who sang Mambo No. 5?
Our final text round was on geography. Sample: What is the smallest country in the world?
‘Who Are We?’ had been in the lead all night but after the final picture round they were matched in points by Team ‘Six on the Beach’ so we went into a tiebreaker.
Congratulations to the winning team, ‘Who Are We?’ who were the closest in guessing the age of the world’s oldest tortoise. They were delighted to each receive the prize of a bottle of wine, kindly donated by The Marketplace in Rodney Bay Marina.
We thank quizmaster Vince for his professional delivery of questions, answers and scores, including his joke about elephants communicating by “trunk calls”! We are grateful to Impy and staff at the Yacht Club for attending to the food and drinks orders. Many thanks to the SLAPS volunteers who worked hard preparing the quiz, and on the night.
The answers to the questions above are:
1. Matriarch
2. Seafood
3. Lou Bega
4. Vatican City
Wassim and Debbie were not at the May quiz as their wedding takes place this month. In lieu of gifts, some of their guests are sending donations to SLAPS. We thank the couple for this caring gesture, and wish them extreme happiness.
The next quiz will revert to the first Tuesday of the month: 2nd June.
See you on 2nd June!

St Patrick’s Day at Windjammer, but unfortunately the luck of the Irish did not produce any adoptions for our rescue dogs. Fiona, our little black dog, only rescued from being poisoned last week, was nervous but loved the attention she got from the kids.

Huge thanks to the SLAPS supporters who are presently in Saint Lucia. The March quiz was another full house, and an evening packed with good cheer, all for a worthy cause.
We launched with a round about money. Sample question: In 2010 the first retail Bitcoin transaction was used to pay for what? (See below for the answer.)
Three teams correctly answered every question on the statues round, and another five teams had only one incorrect answer. Too easy? Do you know on which island the Moai (monolithic human figures) are found?
The next round was acronyms, and we marked it strictly. What does PETA stand for?
March 17th is Saint Patrick’s Day so we included a round on Ireland. Example question: Where in Dublin will you find the ornate “Book of Kells”?
And finally, a round on authors. Who wrote The Lord of the Rings?
It was a close finish. Team Twice Nightly, who won the February quiz, scored 51 but were pipped at the post by Ides of March who had a score of 52. Their team name changes every month but the core members have been attending the quiz, and supporting SLAPS, for years. We congratulate them on their win, which was rewarded with a bottle of wine for each team member, kindly donated by The Marketplace in Rodney Bay Marina.
We thank quizmaster Vince for announcing questions, answers and scores, punctuated by his quips and jokes. We are most grateful to Impy and staff at the Yacht Club for attending to the food and drinks orders of the large crowd. Many thanks to the SLAPS volunteers who worked hard preparing the quiz, and on the night. Special thanks to Marianne for the floral table decorations.
The answers to the questions above are:
1. Pizza
2. Easter Island
3. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals
4. Trinity College
5. J. R. R. Tolkien
The next quiz will be on Tuesday 7th April, immediately after the Easter weekend. The quiz is a popular event so please book your table several days in advance by contacting Impy on 714 4824. Please also bring pens to fill in the answer sheets, and think, ahead of time, of a snazzy team name.
SLAPS thanks everyone who supports the monthly quiz and looks forward to another strong show of support in April.

Malinois Appolonia and her daughter Vanity were a big attraction at Windjammer this week. They got a lot of attention, especially by the young children. The dogs loved every minute of it, giving out kisses freely. We had one of Bruno Project’s Canadian volunteers join us; she’s here to es**rt 5 dogs back to their waiting homes in Ontario.

Hats off to SLAPS supporters: the February quiz broke attendance records! Thank you to everyone who came, exercised their brains, and had another fun evening. Our apologies to those who asked for a table on the day of the event and were disappointed.
With Valentine’s Day looming, the opening round was about love. Sample question: In Greek mythology, who fell in love with his own image reflected in a pool of water? (See below for the answer.)
The next round was about chocolate. Example question: What is the distinctive shape of a Guylian Belgian chocolate?
Continuing with the love theme, we then turned the spotlight on celebrity couples. Can you name the partner of Brooklyn Beckham? Well done Team Love Boat on knowing all 10 couples!
February is the month when Saint Lucians celebrate having gained independence in 1979. Besides asking teams to give the precise date of handover (22nd) we sought the name of the two flower festivals held on this island. Team Six on the Beach should be proud of themselves for correctly answering all 10 questions about our beautiful country.
We polished off with a picture round on Caribbean flags. The final score saw two teams in first place: Twice Nightly and The Exiles. The tie-breaker was challenging but the answer from Twice Nightly was the closest, and they were presented with the prizes of wine, kindly donated by The Marketplace in Rodney Bay Marina.
We thank quizmaster Vince for announcing questions, answers, scores and jokes. We are most grateful to Impy and staff at the Yacht Club for attending to the food and drinks orders of the large crowd. Many thanks to the SLAPS volunteers who worked hard preparing the quiz, and on the night. Special thanks to Marianne for the colourful floral table decorations.
The answers to the questions above are:
1. Narcissus
2. Seashell
3. Nicola Peltz
4. Rose and Marguerite
The next quiz will be on Tuesday 3rd March. We don’t like to disappoint supporters so please book your table several days in advance by contacting Impy on 714 4824. Please also bring pens to fill in the answer sheets, and think, ahead of time, of a snazzy team name. Looking forward to another huge show of support in March.
