Beirut Reconstruction Initiative

In the wake of the deep wounds that continue to gnaw at the hearts of those who lost loved ones, homes, and a part of their very souls in the tragic Port of Beirut explosion on August 4, 2020, we, the people of this city, remain steadfast in our demand for justice. We are determined to rise from sorrow and rebuild - not only with stone and steel, but with the love and generosity that define the Lebanese spirit.

The Beirut Reconstruction Initiative began as a sincere volunteer movement led by a new generation of young men and women - architects, engineers, psychologists, and social workers - who selflessly gave their time, skills, and compassion. For over a year, they worked tirelessly to restore Beirut’s devastated neighborhoods and rekindle hope among its residents.

These contributors - coordinated through an initiative by the office of architect Joseph Brakhya, in partnership with the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul - are nothing short of angels. They worked silently and humbly, driven by a noble mission, not recognition.

Some donated funds or materials, while others labored with skill and dedication. Their work went beyond physical reconstruction; it touched the emotional and human core. They sat with families, shared meals, and gave from their own homes - clothes, furniture, necessities - in a moving show of solidarity.

To those who lost the irreplaceable, we offer heartfelt condolences and enduring support. And to the architects, volunteers, and true angels who restored not just buildings but lives, we express our deepest gratitude. You are the luminous face of Lebanon, proof that our society’s virtues endure despite political failure and corruption.

May the spirit of the “Angels of Beirut” live on and inspire others in Lebanon and beyond. May your kindness echo through time.

بالرغم من الجراح العميقة التي ما زالت تنهش قلوب أولئك الذين فقدوا أحباءهم، ومنازلهم، وجزءًا من أرواحهم في الانفجار المأساوي الذي وقع في مرفأ بيروت في الرابع من آب 2020، فإنّنا نحن، أبناء هذه المدينة، لا نزال ثابتين في مطلبنا بتحقيق العدالة. ونحن عازمون على النهوض من بين رماد الحزن، والمضي قدمًا في إعادة إعمار مدينتنا – لا بالحجر والحديد فحسب، بل بالمحبة التي توحّدنا، وبالكرم الذي لطالما شكّل جوهر الروح اللبنانية.

لقد انطلقت مبادرة "إعادة إعمار بيروت" كحركة تطوعية صادقة، يقودها جيل جديد من الشابات والشبان – من معماريين، ومهندسين، وأخصائيين نفسيين، وعاملين اجتماعيين – وهبوا وقتهم، ومهاراتهم، وخبراتهم بروح من العطاء والتفاني. وعلى مدى أكثر من عام، عملوا دون كلل لإعادة الحياة إلى أحياء بيروت المنكوبة، وبثّ الأمل في نفوس سكانها الجرحى.

وقد نُسِّقت هذه الجهود من خلال مبادرة أطلقها مكتب المعماري جوزيف براخيا، بالتعاون مع جمعية مار منصور دي بول، فجاءت ثمرة عمل خيّر، صامت، متواضع، يؤدّيه ملائكة على هيئة بشر، لا يسعون إلى مجد شخصي أو تقدير، بل تدفعهم رسالة إنسانية نبيلة.

ساهم بعضهم بالتبرعات المالية أو بالمواد الإنشائية، فيما انكبّ آخرون على العمل الميداني بحرفيّة عالية وإخلاص عميق. غير أنّ عطائهم تجاوز إطار الإعمار المادي ليطال الأبعاد العاطفية والإنسانية؛ إذ جلسوا مع العائلات المنكوبة، شاركوهم الطعام، وقدّموا لهم من بيوتهم الخاصة ما استطاعوا – من ألبسة، وأثاث، وحاجيات منزلية – في صورة مؤثّرة من التضامن والتكافل الاجتماعي.

إلى أولئك الذين فقدوا ما لا يُعوَّض، نوجّه أحرّ تعازينا، ونجدّد دعمنا الثابت لهم. وإلى المعماريين، والمتطوّعين، وهؤلاء الملائكة الحقيقيين الذين لم يرمموا الجدران فحسب، بل رمموا الأرواح، وأعادوا الحياة، نرفع أسمى آيات الشكر والتقدير والعرفان. أنتم الوجه المضيء للبنان، والدليل الحي على أنّ قيم مجتمعنا الأصيلة ما زالت تنبض، رغم قتامة الواقع السياسي، وفساد المنظومة، وتقصير المسؤولين.

فليدم عطاؤكم، يا "ملائكة بيروت"، وليكن حبّكم شعلة تنير دروب الأمل في مجتمعنا، وتلهم العالم أجمع. ولتدوِ روحكم الطيبة صدًى لا ينطفئ في الزمن.

This Shall Not Be Forgotten!

last night, 21/12/2022, 2 years and 4 months after the Beirut explosion, 'Joseph Brakhya Architects' held a Christmas dinner for the Beirut Angels at Beyt Mar Mikhael - a house that was damaged by the explosion!
This group of architects and engineers from the 'Beirut Reconstruction Initiative' are amazing professionals who volunteered to work full time, some for over a year, offering their skills, with a zest of love to help rebuild Beirut after the blast. They brough joy to so many familes in Beirut with their endless generousity, and amazing resilience!
May this Christmas and every Christmas, bring more joy to these angels, and more angels to this world!

August 21, 2022 - Architects have already inspected numerous "high priority" houses, conducted damage analysis, written bills of quantities, and submitted their AutoCAD (.dwg) files!
2 days later, Mr. Joseph Brakhya decided to call the team members "Beirut Angels"! 🤍

August 19, 2020 - Only 15 days after the explosion, the teams of volunteering architects were organised, damaged houses were identified, and reconstruction was on its way!
