Phone Call, SMS and Internet Rates Increased in South Sudan

The National Communication Authority (NCA) has approved Phase Two of the Telecommunications Tariff Exchange Rate Adjustment, which takes effect at midnight on Sunday, July 26, 2026.

The adjustment follows consultations with government institutions, mobile network operators, civil society organizations, and other stakeholders. It will be implemented by Digitel South Sudan, MTN South Sudan, and Zain South Sudan.

According to the operators, the move is intended to address rising operational costs in the telecommunications sector, including increasing energy prices, inflation, the depreciation of the South Sudanese Pound (SSP), limited access to foreign currency for network maintenance and upgrades, and the need for continued investment in modern telecommunications infrastructure.

The telecom companies emphasized that the measure is an exchange rate adjustment rather than an increase in the underlying telecommunications tariffs. They said the adjustment aligns the exchange rate used for tariff calculations with prevailing economic conditions while ensuring the continued delivery of reliable services across the country.

The NCA stated that it has directed operators to absorb a significant portion of inflationary pressures to minimize the impact on consumers. As a result, the approved adjustment has been limited to the minimum level necessary to support the sustainability of the telecommunications sector.

Digitel, MTN, and Zain reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining service quality, strengthening network reliability, and expanding digital inclusion through continued investment in telecommunications infrastructure.
