Exactly twenty (20) years ago today, on 9th January 2005, the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) was signed at Nyayo Stadium in Nairobi. Five years later, on 9th January 2011, we then Southern Sudanese participated in the historic referendum on independence. Ninety-nine percent (99%) of us voted to secede, and in doing so, we won our independence from the greater Sudan.
I was present at Nyayo Stadium on 9th January 2005. I remember the excitement. I remember the hope. I shall never forget that day. The song, which embodied our hope for a peaceful Sudan, became an anthem for our people as it aired on Kenyan media. I felt emotional one day when Abul Majur Dak narrated to me how as a little girl watching the song in the Kenyan media made her crave for home.

Twenty years later, South Sudanese are dying of hunger. The sound of guns has not gone silent. Bombs are still falling from the air. South Sudan, we must get the freedom we were promised the freedom we fought for, the freedom we voted for.
