Kenyan researcher Prof. George Njoroge has won a Sh446 million award alongside UK scientist Prof. Robert Bristow to advance early detection of oesophageal cancer, a disease affecting the food pipe that connects the throat to the stomach and is essential in the process of swallowing and digestion.
The oesophagus plays a key role in transporting food through rhythmic muscle movements, but it is also vulnerable to serious conditions, including acid reflux, swallowing difficulties, and Oesophageal cancer, a condition often diagnosed late and linked to high mortality rates in Kenya and other regions.
