We develop resilient community conservancies that transform peopleโ€™s lives, build peace & conserve natural resources.

NRT is made up of 43 community conservancies in Northern Kenya, and was established by the communities to better manage their natural resources. The Trust empowers these communities to be self-sufficient and well governed, helping them to manage livestock grazing in harmony with wildlife and to diversify their livelihoods through tourism and other enterprises.

๐ŸŒฑ๐ŸŒ Happy World Environment Day!

The Earth is sending signals.

Across the world, communities are experiencing rising temperatures, prolonged droughts, changing seasons, biodiversity loss, and increasing pressure on the natural systems that sustain life.

But another signal is emerging too: communities taking action.

Across our member conservancies, communities are using simple, practical, and homegrown approaches to restore degraded rangelands, protect wildlife habitats, safeguard marine ecosystems, strengthen climate resilience, and invest in nature-based solutions that support both people and nature.

From women-led grass seed banks and semi-circular earth bunds in northern Kenya that help restore degraded landscapes, accelerate pasture regeneration, and support the capture and storage of carbon in the soil โ€” to massive community-driven beach clean-up initiatives that remove tonnes of plastic and other non-biodegradable waste from critical sea turtle nesting habitats โ€” local actions are helping build healthier ecosystems, stronger livelihoods, and a more sustainable future.

Today, we celebrate the communities, leaders, and partners who are demonstrating that climate action is not only possible โ€” it is already happening.

The Earth is sending signals. Communities are responding! ๐Ÿ’ช

This week, Cabinet Secretary for Lands, Public Works, Housing and Urban Development, Hon. Alice Wahome, E.G.H., presided over the issuance of 60 title deeds in Samburu County, securing community land and public utility areas.

The title deeds cover five community land parcels across Kalepo and Ngilai Community Conservancies and 55 public utility plots, safeguarding more than 369,000 acres for current and future generations. The public utility titles secure critical community assets, including schools, dispensaries, police stations, and other public infrastructure that support local development and service delivery.

This achievement marks the culmination of more than a decade of community efforts to complete the registration process, strengthening land tenure security, protecting important community assets, and creating a stronger foundation for sustainable development, governance, and conservation.

We congratulate the communities on this achievement and appreciate the partnership and collaboration of all stakeholders who have supported the journey, including The Nature Conservancy in Africa, the Ministry of Lands, Public Works, Housing and Urban Development and the Samburu County Government.

Secure community land rights are essential for empowering communities to steward their natural resources, strengthen livelihoods, and plan confidently for their future.

On 21st May 2026, through support from the Embassy of Denmark in Kenya and Somalia, we officially handed over 15 outboard engines, each with an output of 15 horsepower, to benefit 75 fishers in Kiunga Ward, Lamu County, under our Fish to Market (FTM) Project and Gear Exchange Program (GEP).

The new engines will enable fishers to safely access offshore fishing grounds beyond the reef, helping reduce pressure on nearshore marine ecosystems while promoting more sustainable fishing practices.

The intervention is expected to support ecosystem recovery, improve access to markets for sustainably caught seafood, and strengthen livelihoods for coastal fishing communities across the Lamuโ€“Tana Seascape.

This milestone forms part of NRTโ€™s broader Nature-based Solutions work and ongoing efforts to support sustainable fisheries management, marine conservation, and resilient community livelihoods along Kenyaโ€™s northern coast.

The event was officiated by the Deputy Governor of Lamu County, H.E. Dr. Mbarak Mohamed, alongside officials from the County Government of Lamu, and representatives from the Royal Danish Embassy, The Nature Conservancy in Africa, Fauna & Flora, Kenya Wildlife Service, the Lamu County Commissionerโ€™s Office, beach management units, civil society organizations, community members, and other government agencies.

We extend our sincere appreciation to the Royal Danish Embassy, and all partners supporting community-led marine conservation and sustainable livelihoods along Kenyaโ€™s coast.

Across nearly 80% of NRT member conservancies, where pastoralism remains the primary livelihood for communities, healthy rangelands are essential not only for livestock production, but also for sustaining wildlife habitats, biodiversity, and the tourism opportunities that support local economies.

With the United Nations declaring 2026 as the International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists ( ), community-led restoration efforts across northern Kenya are continuing to demonstrate how nature-based solutions (NbS) can restore degraded landscapes while strengthening livelihoods.

This week, together with partners from Conservation International and Justdiggit, we visited West Gate Community Conservancy, in Samburu County to witness the growing impact of restoration efforts under the Green Climate Fund-supported TWENDE (Towards Ending Drought Emergencies) Project.

At the women-led Narikoo Grass Seed Bank, restoration is creating more than greener landscapes โ€” it is generating skills, income, and long-term resilience to climate shocks.

Supported through semi-circular earth bunds, reseeding efforts, and sustainable land management training, the site has already produced:

๐ŸŒฑ 160 kg of grass seed during the first harvest season
๐ŸŒฑ 400 bales of hay for household use and sale
๐ŸŒฑ KES 128,000 earned from harvested seeds and hay
๐ŸŒฑ New livelihood opportunities for women, including livestock investment

What stood out most during the visit was the strong sense of community ownership and stewardship around restoration efforts, particularly among the women leading implementation on the ground.

Beyond restoring the immediate site, harvested grass seeds are also helping reseed other degraded rangelands within West Gate Conservancy and even neighbouring conservancies โ€” expanding restoration impact while creating local enterprise opportunities.

Through partnerships and locally led Nature-based Solutions, communities are not only restoring landscapes, but also strengthening the systems that sustain livelihoods, wildlife, and future generations.

We concluded the 6th annual Womenโ€™s Leadership Summit in Isiolo last night with moments of celebration, reflection, song, dance, and shared stories โ€” a powerful close to two days dedicated to amplifying womenโ€™s voices and leadership in conservation.

Throughout the day, women leaders continued to share inspiring personal journeys of resilience, courage, and determination โ€” reflecting on the barriers they have overcome, the lessons they have learned, and the paths they are continuing to forge within their communities.

The conversations also featured strong calls for greater inclusion of women in leadership and decision-making spaces, alongside reflections on the importance of mentorship, financial empowerment, and creating opportunities for future generations of young women to grow into leadership.

A special session led by a medical expert created space for conversations around womenโ€™s health, wellbeing, nutrition, and personal care โ€” reinforcing the importance of supporting women holistically as leaders within their homes, workplaces, and communities.

Women leaders from participating Northern Kenya Rangelands Carbon Project (NKRCP) conservancies also shared their experiences in community stewardship, while helping unpack key topics around community land governance, conservation financing, and how carbon projects can create long-term benefits for communities when grounded in transparency, participation, and shared understanding.

As the summit came to a close, one message stood out clearly: women want their voices, experiences, and stories to be heard more widely โ€” not only to inspire one another, but to help shape a more inclusive future for conservation and community leadership across the landscapes they call home.

We are grateful to all partners, facilitators, and women leaders who made this yearโ€™s summit possible, and we look forward to continuing to grow spaces where women can lead, learn, mentor, and inspire.
