Chukonhi (忠魂碑), or loyalty monuments, were first erected during the Meji restoration period to honor those who died for the Emperor in the Sino-Japanese War and the Russo-Japanese War. The monuments emphasized the virtue of loyalty and was often used as a symbol of militarism when forming ideology. This particular chukonhi was constructed in 1937, and is said to be the last remaining monument in Okinawa.
