On this day in 1775, the Second Continental Congress authorized the enlistment of six companies of expert riflemen, founding what would become the United States Army. Since then, the US Army has been the knife-edge of freedom, all around the globe, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

This We’ll Defend!

On June 5, the USARJ Band, along with the Tokyo Fire Department Band and the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force’s 1st Division Band, came together to remember the destruction and recovery from the Great East Earthquake and Tsunami that devestated Japan eleven years ago.

Operation Tomodachi was the US Military’s response in the initial days following the earthquake, with the USARJ Band being the very first servicemembers to arrive on the scene to provide humanitarian relief and to help begin the recovery process.

Sgt. Nicholas Smith conducted and premiered an original composition, titled “Spirit of the U.S.A.,” a musicial representation of the American willingness to help anyone in times of need, including our Japanese allies.

Opportunities to use music to become even closer friends and stronger allies is what we look forward to the most, and we are proud to stand together with Japan, our tomodachi.

Earlier today in Yokohama, the USARJ Band Brass Quintet helped welcome Lt. Col. Thomas Campeau to the 836th Transportation Battalion “Team Fuji” as Lt. Col. Joseph Batiste relinquished command in a change of command ceremony.

Ensuring USARJ installations are adequately supplied is just one of the many ways that “Team Fuji” plays a large role in contributing to the USARJ mission.

The concert will take place at Ikebukuro’s Global Ring Theater, just outside the West Entrance of Ikebukuro Station, beginning at 12:30.

We will perform alongside other Japanese civilian and military bands in an international community effort as Japan continues its healing from the earthquake disaster which occurred 11 years ago.

The concert is free and open to the public.

The USARJ Band Woodwind Quintet and Brass Band delighted audiences this past weekend as they performed throughout Kyotango City during the 2022 Kyogamisaki Air Festival, hosted by 航空自衛隊 Japan Air Self-Defense Force (JASDF) Kyogamisaki.

The USARJ Brass Band teamed up with musicians from the 防衛省 海上自衛隊 (Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force) (JMSDF) Maizuru Band at the beautiful Hacchohama Seaside Park as fighter planes and helicopters from the JASDF and the JMSDF performed an air show.

We are always looking forward to collaborating with our Japanese allies and fellow musicians to strengthen the bond between the United States and Japan.

Over the Memorial Day weekend, members of the USARJ Band, along with members of the USAF Band of the Pacific - Asia, the U.S. Pacific Fleet Band, and the Royal Australian Navy Band paid tribute to the thousands of service members buried at the Guam Veterans Ceremony.

Honoring those who have given their lives in defense of our freedoms and to protect our allies is our most solemn duty, and is an international effort.

As representatives and musical ambassadors of US Army Japan, the US Forces in Japan, and the United States, we have the unique role of using music to strengthen the relationship between Japan and the United States.

It’s not every day that you see an U.S. Army band performing at a U.S. Marine Corps Ceremony! The USARJ Band took part in a Change of Command Ceremony at Combined Arms Training Center, Camp Fuji, as Colonel Robert J. Bodisch, Jr. transferred command of CATC Camp Fuji to Colonel Neil J. Owens.

Working together with our US Forces and Japanese counterparts is an integral part of strengthening the U.S.—Japan alliance, increasing readiness and lethality, and maintaining a free and open Indo-Pacific region.

We had the pleasure of traveling to Camp Asaka in Saitama Prefecture to visit the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force Central Band! Upon arrival to the Central Band’s facilities, they performed a wonderful marching band demonstration. After each instrument section had a chance to get to know one another a little bit, each band performed a short show, followed by a joint concert.

We love opportunities where we get to work side-by-side with our Japanese friends through the shared love of music.

After completing two weeks of grueling training and testing on thirty weapon, tactical, and medial tasks, five of our own earned the coveted Expert Soldier Badge!

The training and testing period of the ESB identifies Soldiers who possess the mastery of skills intregal to ensuring combat readiness, including physical fitness, land navigation prowess, weapon adeptness, and tactical and medical comprehension.

USARJ has a responsibility to maintain and improve Soldier skills, like the ones evaluated during ESB testing, to meet its mission requirements to defend both the United States and Japan, in addition to maintaining a free and open Indo-Pacific region.

Congratulations to Staff Sgt. Colin Murray, Staff Sgt. Robert Harrison, Spc. Ryan Lastrapes, Spc. Jacob Byrd, and Staff Sgt. Jamal Walker!

Twenty Soldiers from the USARJ Band have spent the past several weeks training in preparation for a chance to earn the Expert Soldier Badge. The requirements to earn an ESB comprise thirty weapon, tactical, and medical tasks, in addition to a physical fitness evaluation, taking place over five days.

The ESB is only awarded to non-infantry and non-medic Soldiers who are able to successfully complete the highly difficult tasks, demonstrating that they are experts at individual Soldier and battle skills, increasing lethality on the battlefield.

Good luck to those hoping to earn the Expert Soldier Badge!

Today marks the eleventh anniversary of the Great Eastern Earthquake, a day that will be forever remembered, as the United States and Japan stood together in the midst of many dark days, becoming even closer friends and stronger allies. We admire the resiliency of the Japanese people and our own Soldiers as they took part of Operation Tomodachi (Friend), a bilateral effort to provide humanitarian relief in the days following the earthquake and tsunami. To honor this anniversary, the USARJ Band presents "Song for Japan," composed by Steven Verhelst, in support of the events that occurred.

This week, we're reflecting on the collaborative effort of the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force and US Army Japan after Japan experienced the most powerful earthquake in the nation's history, eleven years ago. Then-members of the USARJ Band took part of Operation Tomodachi, the US Military's 24,500 service member response, to help our host nation recover after the earthquake and tsunami through both humanitarian aid and music. We are proud to stand side-by-side with our Japanese neighbors, our tomodachi.
