What an amazing experience!
great experiance!! #maikoya

What a highlight in our holliday!
Wearing a real kimono dress as mum and daughter. It was a great experience at the tea ceremony ! We will never forget!
Thank you.

Kimono, tea ceremony and cultural experiences. Japan's best rated tea ceremony and kimono wearing experience located in Osaka, Kyoto, and Tokyo.

Maikoya Osaka is an upscale cultural experience venue located in the heart of Osaka.

Himeji Castle is well known as a world heritage, which was originally built in 1346. This magnificent main building is called "天守閣”, "tenshukaku", it has been remained like this since 1609. There are still many castles in Japan ,but there are only twelve castles with "天守閣” which was built in Edo period exist, and Himeji Castle is one of them. You may think "天守閣” was the place where a leader of samurais lived but this was actually used for guards who protected the castle and also as warehouse. Nickname of this castle is "白鷺”, egret castle. Because its beautiful white color and spectacular figure are like an egret flying spreading its wings.

Bamboos are seen in many places in Japan. Especially one of the most well known places in Kyoto, Bamboo Grove. Bamboo shoots, baby bamboos are used in traditional Japanese dishes. The best season for the harvest is spring. Then bamboo shoots grow very fast before summer, like they reach up to 20 meters in 2 months! It is know as one of the fast growing plants in the world and durable among any kinds of plants. That is why bamboo is used as a symbol of growth and endurance.

祇園小唄(Gion Kokuta).
Gion Kouta was used for a famous movie, “Gion Kouta Ehigasa”. This song is about seasons and sceneries in Kyoto and Maiko’s feelings.
This is one of the major songs for Maikosan and they dance with this song even if they have enough experience as Maikosan.

Senno Rikyu (千利休) was the one who completed the tea ceremony in its present form, one of the most important figures in the history of the tea ceremony.⠀
He was an aide of the famous Samurai. Therefore he also spread the culture of tea ceremony to Samurais. Later, the tea ceremony was divided into three schools. Urasenke style is the one of them. We MAIKOYA are providing Urasenke style tea ceremony.⠀

Calligraphy is a kind of meditation. It is also related to zen and tea ceremony. Kanji, Chinese characters were brought from China around 285 and then after Buddhism was introduced to Japan in the middle of 500, transcribing a sutra became popular. It is said to be the beginning of calligraphy history in Japan. Here at MAIKOYA, you can experience deep Japanese culture through calligraphy and tea ceremony!⠀

This is a special pillow called “takanakura”. Maiko, apprentice geisha, uses her own hair to setup the traditional hair style and it takes about 40 minutes to one hour to setup by a professional hair dresser, so she needs to keep her hair for a week without washing it. That’s why she uses the special pillow to keep her hair.

You may think this lady is geisha. But in Kyoto, we don't call her geisha. She is geiko, a traditional artist. We call apprentice geisha/geiko maiko. Do you know how to recognize maiko or geiko? Geiko wears a wig and less colorful and simple kimono as they are more mature than maiko. Maiko are less experienced as they are teenagers so they wear more decorative hair accessories and kimonos.
