🦇 A legacy of valor! 🦇 VMFA-242 ("The Bats")

For 82 years, the “Bats” of Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 242 (VMFA-242) have answered the call to defend our nation!

Commissioned July 1, 1943, VMFA-242 boasts a storied combat history, beginning in the Solomon Islands and continuing through Saipan, Tinian, and Iwo Jima. The squadron has adapted & evolved, flying the A-4 Skyhawk during the Cuban Missile Crisis, the A-6 Intruder in Vietnam (logging over 16,783 combat sorties!), and the F/A-18 Hornet in Iraq.

Today, VMFA-242 flies the cutting-edge F-35B Lightning II and proudly carries the title of Marine Fighter Attack Squadron of the Year, earning the prestigious Robert M. Hanson Award in 2024! 🏆

From providing close air support during Operation Phantom Fury to standing ready to meet today’s global challenges, the Bats remain committed to defending the United States and promoting security worldwide.
