Boy that really butters my bread (2020)
aluminum, plaster, and acrylic
21cm x 25cm x 31cm

Work Description

OCDiva
In an obsessive act of control over one's environment, a personal story of compulsive behavior was injected into the collective history of urban life. A cycle ensues. Unwanted, uncleaned, and forgotten toilets were collected off the streets of Berlin before being washed, pulverized, and reborn as new porcelain kitchenware.

In collaboration with artist/curators Li Zhenhua and April Gertler, a meal was then cooked and served in these recycled objects at Zhenhua's Big Whale Studio in Berlin.

Boy that really butters my bread
A pound of butter, a broken toaster, and no bread in sight…’Boy that really butters my bread’ plays with the immediate transformation these items take on once their function is removed.

Using the readymade(found object) is similar transition of what we can see in writing a poem. He is interested in the fact that the different kinds of experiences people have in life and therefore attribute to objects. To him, the ready-made with connotations and narratives are very inspiring.

He is interested in the fact that the different kinds of experiences people have in life and therefore attribute to objects. To him, the ready-made with connotations and narratives are very inspiring. Like in DO YOU WANT TO SHARE GUM WITH ME?, there is gum torn in half. It may remind someone of past memory or specific conversation related to that object. Some of his inspirations are mathematical and scientific themes. For example, THE POINCARÉ CONJECTURE is the work inspired by the sentence “Topologist is a mathematician who doesn’t know the difference between a doughnut and a coffee cup!”. LOTTERY TICKET PROJECT($10,000 BONUS CASH) is about the perspective of choice between reason and intuition. Also, his work sometimes deals with duplicity and paradox. MY NOSE WILL GROW NOW shows the paradox which is called the Pinocchio paradox(also known as liar paradox) arises when Pinocchio says "My nose will grow now". If Pinocchio were to say "I am a boy," this could be either true or false, but Pinocchio's sentence "My nose will grow now" can be neither true nor false.

Sun Missed Connection, 2019

Craigslist AD with Envelopes, return address ‘A Place of Longing”, take away

This poem was written while at an artist residency in Iceland for two wintry months. Written while Willauer was located deep in a fjord, where the mountains circled around him with two
openings on opposite ends, the sea on one side and a winding road on the other. During those
wintry months, the sun never rose above the mountains, only allowing the light to spill over without ever seeing the sun directly. This poem was written in reaction to living in shadow for months and posted on Craigslist in Iceland. It’s a poem for the sun and those in his life that closely resembles its strength and nourishment.

Christopher Willauer (b. 1992) is an interdisciplinary artist, writer, and recovering catholic currently based in Brooklyn, New York. He works primarily through performance, sculpture, video, and text to conceptually engage with the body and the natural world in a reverent and ritualistic manner. In his work, the body functions formally and conceptually as an exploration of anxieties, sorrows, pleasures, eroticism, and queerness. His writing is interested in the poetics of longing, love, and time. Through his use of an abstracted diaristic approach and absurdist philosophy he works to evoke a poetic understanding of desire, home, and vulnerability through his elemental and grotesque imagery.

Atlas, (2019)

Video 5'39''

AtlasIs a video divided in three chapters that approaches existential questions aboutGod and the begging of the universe. These questions are not answered by scientists. They are raised by a curious artist that questions the existence of God through Michelangelo’s paintings, Google's voice, Google Earth, space stamps, and a famous song. The artist uses appropriation to create something new, putting the past and the present together, providing a portrait of our time.

Casting out (2019)

Laser prints of an analog photo.

The series ‘Casting Out’ Features analog images from the families archive. Each image shows family members whose faces are covered with an object that makes them unrecognisable. The series is influenced by the personal relationships within the artists family. Closeness, companionship, growing up and conflict are part of the series. Hidden family stories and childhood memories served as a source of inspiration. The series takes a humorous and loving look at shared family memories. Objects on top of the faces of family members makes them unrecognizable , except for the family members themselves. The objects that cover the individuals refer to the personal connection between artist and the portrayed person. ‘Casting Out’ is about personal histories, family ties and memories within the artist’s family.
