NAFA Community,

As you can see below, we are — as of today — monitoring 25 COVID cases here on NAF Atsugi. This a substantial increase from the recent past; however, I think it is understandable as COVID cases around the world are surging. To be clear, NAF Atsugi and Japan overall are still doing exceptionally well.

I would like to emphasize that these positive cases have been entirely associated with our folks coming to us as PCS SOFA members or returning from holiday leave. And in every case, those who have tested positive are lightly symptomatic or asymptomatic, as most are already fully vaccinated. The overall good news here is that these individuals who tested positive are ok, were found, and put into ROM before any community spread. Additionally, our community continues to demonstrate the commitment to the health measures that will continue to keep us safe.

So, please be sure to read and understand the latest PHE above. Its changes reflect our current health atmosphere and increase in numbers and balances these new realities with reasonable and responsible freedom of movement guidance for all SOFA personnel. As always, we need to remain aware of Government of Japan guidance with respect to authorized travel to and from Japan. If you are planning to travel or return from overseas, please stay in close contact with your chain of command for further updates.

Finally, even with these new increases in cases, we all know what to do already. We have the tools, know how to use them, and have kept our selves safe. So, please keep your guard up, recognize the current health atmosphere, and let's continue to take care of each other as we welcome in 2022! Erin and I hope everyone had a Merry Christmas, and we wish everyone a Happy New Year!

Posted below is a "reader-friendly" edition of today's Captain’s Update to assist those whose devices do not support convenient reading and for the sight impaired...

Greetings NAFA Community,

I’d like to formally announce the 2022 NAF Atsugi Wings of Spring event! This will be a joint event between NAF Atsugi and JMSDF, and it will take place on Saturday, April 23rd, from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. We will have static aircraft displays on both the flight line and Taylor Field and multiple booths where squadrons can sell their gear. Also, there will be plenty of food, music, and jumpy toys for the kids on Taylor Field.

As a joint event with our JMSDF partners, we want the JMSDF and our Japanese guests to fully participate and feel fully welcome. Accordingly, I am requiring mask wear on the installation during the event unless actively eating or drinking in alignment with Japanese policy.

With respect to who can come, this is still not a traditional Spring Fest. So, this will not be an open base event. Instead, anyone with a normal (daily) expectation of coming on the base is invited as well as their guests in accordance with our base guest policy which is up to seven guests. JMSDF family members and guests will also be in attendance as well.

I think this will be an absolutely fantastic day, I cannot wait to kick this event off! This will be the first event of this nature since COVID started, and I look forward to seeing as many people as possible coming out to enjoy this wonderful day.

Finally, I would like to extend a Bravo Zulu to our JMSDF teammates for their efforts in working alongside my team to make this a successful event! Also, Bravo Zulu to the combined efforts of NAFA’s MWR, Security, Fire, Public Works, Commissary, Exchange, Flight Line, and all other departments and service providers who have been working, coordinating, and supporting this event! NAFA, we have a great team—thank you for what you do every day! I know this will be a wonderful event for our families and our JMSDF partners!
