What are the teaching phases?

Phase 1: The Here-and-Now Phase. 100 hours (about 3–6 weeks of intense hours).

In this stage, the nurturer helps us begin by using play-like activities. We learn to understand around 800 words and pick up many grammar patterns through lots of exposure. We start tuning our ears to the new language and slowly begin speaking. At this point, we can follow fairly complex speech if it’s about the here-and-now, and we can manage survival expressions. Speaking, however, still feels very hard. Our main relationship is usually only with the nurturer, since meaningful connections with others in the host world are not yet possible. By the end of this stage, our ability is around FSI Level 0+.

Phase 2: Story-Building Phase. 150 hours.

Here, we use wordless picture stories and other visual aids to expand our ability to talk and understand. While our speaking still works best in the here-and-now, we can now follow longer narratives, especially when they are supported by pictures and interaction with our nurturer. Our relationship with the nurturer grows deeper, and we may begin a few other relationships - though with difficulty. We add another 1,200 words to our listening vocabulary and begin participating in some public situations in local life.

Phase 3: Shared-Story Phase. 250 hours.

We move into hearing and discussing “world stories” (well-known tales like Cinderella) and other shared cultural content. We also share personal experiences with our nurturer and reflect on them together. We start talking in more detail about daily life and public experiences, and we begin to grasp basic expository language. Our conversational ability grows then we can hold discussions on a wider range of topics and tell simple stories. At this stage, we can begin to form deeper friendships with several people.

Phase 4: Deep-Life-Sharing Phase. 500 hours.

Now, we dive into life stories and interviews about people’s lives, their roles, and their social experiences. We learn how host people interpret and give meaning to their world. Together with friends, we build “epic stories” over time through co-construction and repetition. By now, we can have a wide variety of conversations, narrate with more richness, and even begin producing some expository speech. Relationships deepen further, as people open their hearts to us, and we do the same.

Phase 5: Native-to-Native Discourse Phase. 500 hours.

This stage focuses on understanding what people say to each other, not just to us. We spend time working with recorded native-to-native conversations, identifying where comprehension breaks down and working through those parts. We gain the ability to take part in real communities of practice (like a sports club, study group, or hobby circle) and begin to be seen as “one of us.” At this point, we understand most of what we hear, and our language growth becomes continuous as long as we keep engaging with people.

Phase 6: Self-Sustaining Growth

As Phase 5 suggests, this stage is about ongoing, natural growth. We continue living life in the host language, developing fluency and cultural understanding as part of daily life. The key mindset is: “This is not just a language to be learned - it’s a life to be lived.”

The Six-Phase Program

The Six-Phase Program is just one way of realizing the Growing Participator Approach in practice. The phases are based on the nature of the supercharged participation activities, which keep changing as the growing participators' abilities change until they reach the stage where healthy growth continues without the aid of special activities-Phase 6-which goes on for the duration of their life among the particular host people. Although the phases are defined primarily in terms of the special growth activities, they are also characterized in terms of the development of life among host people in general.
