Volunteers of Operation GRACE Extend Care to Staff and Students of Westwood High School

On the morning of Wednesday, February 4, 2026, the extremely cool weather conditions provided quite a contrast to the warm reception which students and volunteers of Operation GRACE received upon their arrival at Westwood High School - located in the cool hills of Trelawny.

The extent of the impact of Hurricane Melissa was immediately evident. Several buildings still bore the scars of an unwelcome visitor which had left destruction as its defining footprint. The school auditorium was completely destroyed and the roofs of several classrooms were severely damaged with tarpaulins used as a canopy to shelter from the elements, clearly highlighting the toll of the hurricane on the institution's physical infrastructure. The staff and principal were warm, receptive and deeply grateful for the visit. The recipients of the care packages were appreciative, though it was evident that not all students were in high spirits.

The emotional impact of the hurricane on members of the school community was noticeable, underscoring the ongoing challenges they continue to face. There was however an unmistakable sense of hope amidst all of this which echoed the call to continue to press forward and rebuild.

During the trip, the NGH students were treated to a guided tour of the school campus by two Westwood High students and were also invited to observe and participate in a Mathematics session. The session, led by a vibrant and engaging Mathematics teacher, featured creative student presentations and allowed for meaningful interaction between students from both schools.

The visit provided valuable insight into the extent of the school’s damage while reaffirming that our presence and support served as encouragement and hope during a difficult period for the school community.
Care packages valued at least J$11,500.00 each were handed out to selected students and staff members whose families were severely impacted during the passing of Hurricane Melissa.

Gifts Shared and Friendships Formed as Operation GRACE Visits York Castle High School

Operation GRACE has been a wonderful experience of love, hope, triumph, resilience and friendship. Our visit to York Castle High School - located in the cool hills of Browns Town, St. Ann - on February 11 helped to solidify these qualities in the fabric of our interactions.

The warm welcome our team of twenty volunteers (NGH staff and students and NYFDF volunteers) received, was in stark contrast to the characteristic chilly Browns Town weather. The interaction which ensued between principals, among students and staff was rich, spirited and simply genuine.

Nods of empathy, peals of laughter, new friendships being formed, staff interacting with students…the entire interaction was indicative of the fact that the principles of Operation GRACE had been achieved:

Gifts
Relief
Access
Engagement

In the words of one student volunteer, “For me personally, it was the resilience. The students, and even the principal, smiled and laughed…in everything, despite the misfortune.”

The successes of Operation GRACE can be found, like nuggets, lodged in the hearts of our NGH students: “I learnt the importance of community and togetherness. I have learnt that many people go through challenges and it is how you get through it that matters.”

Care packages valued at least J$11,500.00 each were handed out to selected students and staff members whose families were severely impacted during the passing of Hurricane Melissa.

Operation GRACE Touches Staff and Students at St. Hilda’s Diocesan High School

On Friday, January 30, 2026, our team of volunteers, students and staff of the Northgate Youth and Family Development Foundation (NYFDF) and NorthGate High School (NGH) visited St. Hilda’s Diocesan High School - located in the cool hills of Browns Town, St. Ann. It was a day of beautiful weather, spent in the company of beautiful people. The pervading, rich internal resolve was palpable as the students of both institutions shared from the chronicles of their “Hurricane Melissa experiences”, concluding with a sense of gratitude to be in a position to be thankful, regardless of the magnitude of loss experienced.

It was amazing to witness the bond which developed between the students and staff of both schools. It augurs well for the future and is definitely a signal of the beginning of wonderful and productive future interactions.

In the words of one of the students of NGH who was on the trip: “This makes me feel very fulfilled, knowing that I helped people who were in need. I also realized that while we have things we should use it to build others up and not ourselves alone.”

Care packages valued at least J$11,500.00 each were handed out to selected students and staff members whose families were severely impacted during the passing of Hurricane Melissa.

…And We’re Off! Operation GRACE Commences at Green Pond Primary and Infant School

The first stop for the team of volunteers, students and staff of the Northgate Youth and Family Development Foundation (NYFDF) and NorthGate High School (NGH) who participated in Operation GRACE, was at the Green Pond Primary and Infant School in Montego Bay, St. James on Thursday, January 29, 2026…and what an interaction it was!

The warm reception of our volunteers by the institution’s staff, students and parents made it clear that the ravages of Hurricane Melissa, though traumatic, had not broken the spirit of this school community. Our volunteers and students were selfless in extending consideration, care and concern and sounded a commitment and resolve to serve as many more communities as given the opportunity to.

Care packages valued at least J$11,500.00 each, were handed out to selected students and staff members whose families were severely impacted during the passing of Hurricane Melissa.

Hope, friendship, support and resilience amidst poignant memories of devastation, served notice that regardless of what the students, staff and families have to face, together we can and will rebuild structures and lives for a greater future.
