The Rt Excellent Norman Washington Manley, father of our nation is attributed with this quote "In a plural world, it is the right to self-determination... which is the inalienable right of every man.” His words underline the significance of autonomy and the ability to shape one's destiny. Though he championed the cause of the nation's independence, it underscores the yearning in the bosom of a people that freedom in every way is a right not a privilege.

In June 1965, Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King delivered the keynote address at the Valedictory Service at the The University of the West Indies, Mona. Here he is on his arrival at the then Palisadoes Airport now the Norman Manley International Airport being escorted by then Senator, Hon. Hugh L. Shearer and Sir Phillip Sherlock, then Vice Chancellor of the UWI. Mrs. Coretta Scott-King accompanied him on the visit.
