Our students were delighted to welcome Maria Gardner and Marc Ferrer, from Asset Risk Consultants Ltds (ARC), at yesterday's lecture. They provided an insight into their interactions with intermediaries such as Trust, Charity and Investment Managers. Their input was invaluable, providing insight into how the academic theories our students are learning in the classroom, are applied in practice in a rigorous professional environment.

27/06/2018

In order for our students to gain the most out of studying for a degree they are often taught by leading industry experts. Our second years recently welcomed Lee Quémard, Head of Investment Reporting at Enhance Group, who hosted a seminar on the 'The Role of International Financial Centres within the global economy’. He provided an ‘on the ground’ insight into the opportunities and challenges offshore centres face, enabling our students to apply academic theory to contemporary issues.

Our second year students are currently studying 'The Role of International Financial Centres' as a core unit in their BSc (Hons) degree in International Financial Services. We were delighted to welcome Allan Wood, Director of Business Development Growth Markets at Jersey Finance. Allan chaired a seminar on the role that Jersey plays in the global economy and how it facilitates FDI in developed and growth markets alike. Our students discussed the challenges Jersey faces going forward and how it is well placed to continue to perform despite the rather volatile global backdrop. As a leading industry figure, Allan’s input was invaluable and we hope to welcome him back.

Our students put their knowledge of Offshore Financial Centers to good use at the Royal Court as they debated the ‘Merits and demerits of Offshore Financial Centers to the global economy, considering moral and social implications’. The debate was adjudicated by Advocates and Partners of Viberts: Christopher Scholefield and Rose Colley.

First-hand experience of investment management 28/02/2018

"Rogue state" instability

"Over 2017 we maintained a cautious approach to equities as we felt valuations were generally too high across the globe. We also made pragmatic use of alternatives and bonds with equity correlation."

"One of our themes is political instability; we access this via Aerospace and Defence ETF which returned +22% last year. Our rather cynical view being every time President Trump threatens a “rogue state”, companies like Lockheed Martin, Raytheon, General Dynamics and Rockwell experience a bump in share price."

Thanks to degree student Catherine Syvret and Master's student Bardia Bonakdar for helping to prepare this month's report.

First-hand experience of investment management

22/02/2018

Our second year students are currently studying Portfolio Management as a core element of their BSc (Hons) International Financial Services degree. The course provides an insight into contemporary academic theory on portfolio management which is applied to the investment industry, ensuring students have a thorough understanding of key methods used in portfolio construction, taking client risk profiles into account.

This week we welcomed Chris Woodward, a Trainee Investment Manager from Quilter Cheviot. Chris hosted a discussion regarding the pensions conundrum in light of changing global demographics and the challenges investors face constructing a portfolio to last longer than ever before. Chris linked the discussion with key concepts being covered on the course such as the trade-off to achieve optimal risk and reward, and the efficiency of markets. Chris used the Quilter Cheviot investment philosophy and process to enabled students to link academic theories with practical realities of portfolio management.

Benefits of 2-year degrees include saving on third year of tuition fees and a more focused and condensed timetable.

The JIBS degree also includes an optional paid work placement in industry, further adding value to the degree.
