Kathleen worked across several areas of Highlands College over many years. All who knew her will remember a kind and caring person; professional, perceptive, and understanding of other's needs. Most of all, Kathleen was a treasured wife, mother, and grandmother.
Jo Terry-Marchant, Principal of Highlands College, shared, “I gained a lot personally from Kath’s support and guidance, she had a wealth of knowledge and expertise and treated everyone with the utmost respect and kindness.”
We send our heartfelt condolences from the Highlands College community to Kathleen’s family, grandchildren and friends.
The course will run over 5 workshops (6pm - 9pm) at Highlands College starting in January 2023. The dates are as follows:

On Wednesday, the Level 3 Year 2 Business students had the opportunity to "pitch it out" for a chance to win tickets to this years GREENHOUSE Jersey Business Festival for marketing and sales.
This is the second time our learners have taken part and their ambition and entrepreneurship shone through. The learners had to come up with a pitch for an advert for the event whilst including key criteria including target audience, USP, core messaging and distribution.
The winning team had a clear, concise and effective pitch that emphasised the use of pictures, the eco-friendly undertone and carousel marketing to grab the attention of their target market.
They will be joining Jacqui Patton alongside a host of expert speakers including Daniel Priestly, Dan Knowlton, May James and Joe Glover for a reworking opportunity like no other and the winners were very proud to have won the opportunity to represent the college.

We are thrilled to announce that one of our students has won a prestigious national award!
Ross Ortelli is the winner of the ‘Outstanding Academic Achievement’ category in this year’s Ascentis Access to HE Excellence Awards, and we couldn’t be prouder!
There were a record number of nominations but the judges were greatly impressed by Ross’s high standard of academic excellence and his proficiency in a full range of study skills. One judge commented, “The work completed by the learner was exceptional”.
Ross also recently won the Highlands College PRIDE Sixth-Form Award for Access to HE. We are certain that his qualities of dedication and diligence will continue to lead him to great heights in Higher Education and beyond, and we are excited to see where his academic journey takes him next.
Please join us in congratulating Ross on this remarkable accomplishment and wishing him the very best for his future endeavours! His commitment to excellence serves as inspiration to the entire Highlands College Community.
Well done, Ross! Congratulations!

Skills Jersey provided a delightful culinary experience for budding chefs this Monday, as students from Mont a’ Labbe school were invited to a special cookery workshop.
Under the guidance of our resident Chef Patrick, the students learned the art of crafting Blondie Brownies. With precision and creativity, they expertly mixed white and milk chocolate brownie batter, resulting in the most glorious blondie brownies you can imagine!
But that's not all - the young chefs also got the chance to create their very own customized pizzas! From kneading the pizza dough to adding a variety of delicious toppings and sauces, they crafted personalized culinary masterpieces. The final pizzas looked incredible! 🤤

Autumn courses at Highlands ACE - Adult & Community Education are now live and open for enrolment!

Very many congratulations to our business students who have excelled in the Ashburton Investments School Challenge.
The challenge ran over six months (January to June 2023) and saw 22 teams from across the six Sixth Form schools and colleges in Jersey enter. In December, Ashburton delivered an information session to our Level 3 Year 1 students about how to best create stock portfolios, and this prompted 3 teams of students from Highlands College to enter. Students used their free time at home or over lunch to research and create portfolios of stock which the team at Ashburton then tracked for 6 months.
Our students won the trophy for best performing school, and the award for the best performing stock, with one of our student teams selecting a stock that increased in value by over 175% in the 6-month period.
Congratulations to all the students who took part from Highlands College: Micaela Fernandes, Lea Le Bailly, Chloe Perestrelo, Kelly Teixiera, Ellie Clegg, Oliwia Nikodemska, Jasmine Vieira, Jessica Fortes, Gabriel Cruz, Joel Vieira and Reef Webster.

Hot on the heels of a week filled with wonderfully informative CPD sessions, the Teaching and Learning team at Highlands College coordinated a two-day Learning Conference for staff.
The Learning Conference this year was framed against our values: PRIDE.
Recognising and unlocking the POTENTIAL of staff and students through coaching.
Having RESPECT for ourselves and others through positive approaches to behaviour, mental health, and wellbeing.
Using our IMAGINATION to harness Artificial Intelligence and work towards a sustainable future.
Recognising and celebrating DIVERSITY by being inclusive-by-design.
Leading to EXCELLENCE in all we do.
Many thanks to our truly inspirational keynote speakers: Bob Craig, Eowyn Crisfield, Rosie Sharp, Jonny Kay, and Esam Baboukhan, as well as our very own Paul Spencer, Jo Gueno, Paul Bisson and Mike Watkins who delivered a series of breakout sessions.

Last night we held an event to celebrate the success of our Government of Jersey funded social recovery classes.
The maths, English and ESOL classes were offered free of charge and were designed to support lifelong learning within the community. Some learners have reported being better able to assist their children with school work, others now feel more confident to make social and professional connections.
The event brought together learners as well as College tutors to celebrate the incredibly positive impact that these classes have had on the island’s community.

In collaboration with Wella Professionals, the Highlands College Hair and Beauty Academy hosted an educational evening for those in the hairdressing industry.
Celebrity stylists and influencers from the national stage presented new products and demonstrated their proper application using hair models. The event was designed to upskill attendees and bring the newest global trends to Jersey, as well as allow local stylists to network.
We are proud of our partnership with Wella, and are so thrilled that members of the team were able to join us and share their knowledge: Michael Gray Hair and Ben, supported by Chris Burnell, Dani Culverwell and Hollie Graham.
We are planning further collaborations in future. If you would like to be kept in the loop, please drop an email to: [email protected]

Thursday, 22 June, was a day of celebration for Highlands College, with our P.R.I.D.E of Highlands College Sixth Form Awards (more on this to follow), Festival of Celebration (to mark the end of another academic year), and a reunion event for former students and staff members.
Thank you to Andy Sibcy for his wonderful column in ‘The Voice of the JEP’ where he marked the occasion and celebrated the College, writing, ‘And as well as the many other ways in which it enriches young people’s lives and gives them opportunities for growth, the role Highlands plays in building a more inclusive and integrated society is a cause for celebration.’
Thank you again to our sponsors, partners, colleagues, and of course, our speakers for making all three events such a success... official photos will be shared soon.
Jersey Evening Post

The P.R.I.D.E. of Highlands College Sixth Form Awards is a highlight of the college calendar: it shines a spotlight on students who have excelled in their curriculum area, and also celebrates those who embody the College’s core values: Potential. Respect. Imagination. Diversity. Excellence.
We plan to fully showcase our award winners over the upcoming weeks (when we have the official photos from Paul Wright Photographer!), but for now we would like to congratulate all our wonderful award winners, and express sincere gratitude to the local businesses who sponsored awards.
Special thanks also to our speakers, Kate Wright from The Diversity Network - Jersey , and Sean O'Regan, Group Director of Education for Children, Young People, Education and Skills (CYPES).

Welcome to all the Year 11 students who joined us today from across the island for the first of two transition days.
Enjoy the selection of photos from today's activities. A particular favourite for us was when a visiting student in construction made 'cement' from jelly babies in the spaghetti and jelly babies tower building challenge... We loved the 'outside the box thinking'!
Looking forward to day two tomorrow!

Our talented students in Culinary Arts have taken part in a bread bake off.
Over the course of the year, they have learned about different types of bread and so were challenged to pick their favourite, and, in true bake-off style, had to produce 12 loaves to showcase consistency. Students chose to bake sour doughs, olive focaccia, rye loaves, seeded Irish brown soda bread and brioche.
The loaves, together with a range of homemade butters (black treacle, salted and unsalted), were then sold from the Highlands Academy Restaurant. Everything had sold out within 47 minutes, raising an incredible £520 for Brighter Futures Jersey to support the excellent work that is done by the charity.
Thank you to Simon and the team at Four Bakery - Jersey for lending us extra bannetons to cope with the volume of bakes!

Congratulations to our Animal Management students on their successful fundraiser for Durrell.
The students have been learning how to handle a range of animal species, many of whom are residents of the Turner 01 classroom, and today staff and students from across the college were invited to handle the animals for a donation to Durrell.
Animal Management students were on hand to ensure safe handling and also to answer questions about the animal species being handled.

'I just wanted to say how much wonder there is to see, hear and do at this showcase/exhibition - have spent a rather marvellous time this morning wandering through it all and consider it well worth the visit! Kudos to the students of all levels and, of course, all of the talented and expert tutors who have supported them on their creative journeys thus far - great stuff.'
Our Creative Arts Exhibition is open to the public until Thursday 22 June between the hours of 9 am and 4 pm (weekdays only). No need to book. Completely free of charge.

Students studying Art at Highlands College (Level 3 and Foundation degree), have designed a range of t-shirts that will be printed through Teemill, a sustainable printing company.
'Everything we make is made from organic materials, using renewable energy, and designed from the start to come back and be remade when it’s worn out.' ~ Teemill
T-shirts will be available to view and order from our sustainable fashion event on Wednesday 14 June.
Pop on down to Cooper & Co.,Trenton Square (in the IFC5 building behind Big Maggy’s) between 5.30 pm and 7 pm, to check out the designs.

The Highlands College Sustainability Committee conducted an informal survey to ascertain how the College is embedding sustainability in staff and student life, personal practice and – most importantly – teaching and learning.
The results can be found in the accompanying infographic, and underscore some of the excellent sustainability practice already underway across the College.

Over half term we hosted two Hair & Beauty Skills Camps, the first for students in Years 7 and 8, the second for those in Years 9-11.
This was a wonderful introduction to the huge and exciting hair and beauty industries. Students had the chance to explore a wide range of techniques and treatments, with a festival themed twist aimed at inspiring those who may one day want to pursue the industry as a career.
Sessions were delivered by qualified teaching staff from Highlands College and were supported by staff from Skills Jersey.

Congratulations to Sport Levels 2 and 3 on completing their Silver Duke of Edinburgh Expedition.
A fantastic achievement, walking for three days (covering between 15 and 17km each day), and camping for two nights self-sufficiently. Well done!

Congratulations to our Performing Arts students who performed their short Inuit folk tale 'The Ice Wolf', with great success, on 31 May and 1 June in various Parks and Gardens in Jersey.
All audiences were very appreciative. Time and time again our performers were told by parents accompanying their children, how lovely it was to be able to have entertainment created for young people that was free!
A big thank you to Bruce Labey and Richard Le Gresley from Infrastructure and Environment - I&E for granting us the permission to perform over those 2 days.

Our Life Skills students proudly displayed their work in a pop-up exhibition to staff and peers this week. All their work was achieved in just half a term and came about after an initial lesson on tiling under the guidance of Pat Kelly and Mick McCarthy.
The students enjoyed this lesson so much that they decided to design and create mosaics with pieces of broken tiles. At first, they used the tiles to write just their initials but then the designs evolved to include filling in the entire frame. The results were fabulous and will take pride of place in the Life Skills area for all to enjoy.
With the creative bug well and truly caught, the students next built birdboxes, which they will take home for their gardens.
Well done to the Life Skills students who worked so hard on these projects and who then hosted a wonderful exhibition where they answered questions with pride and confidence.
