Yesterday, our Associate Dean and Registrar, Sasha and Lisa, visited the Magistrate’s Court to look at opportunities for our law students to spend time visiting the court, and to explore work opportunities with the court service. Advocate Kate Ferbrache, the Magistrate’s Court Greffier, gave us a tour of the custody suite, courts and meeting spaces. It was a great insight into the hard work that goes on behind the scenes!

One of our LLB/Double Degree students Margaux McQuilton has been on a work experience project for 6 weeks with the Legislative Drafting Office (LDO) which is part of the States Greffe that supports the work of the States Assembly - Jersey’s elected parliament
Many thanks to Matthew Waddington for putting this wonderful opportunity in place. Margaux has been working on the “Rules as Code” project – helping to draft legislation to be computer-readable. This project offers a valuable insight into the process of legislative drafting as well as being part of the global “Rules as Code” movement.
Margaux has found the experience enriching, working alongside Matthew and the LDO team and benefitting from their insight and expertise on drafting legislation.

Our Story
The Institute of Law is a small law school, offering law teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels to small numbers of students, both based in the Channel Islands and worldwide with our online-based virtual-study option, which we can provide to any potential student.
A not-for-profit educational body founded in 2008 by Jersey’s former Bailiff (chief justice) Sir Philip Bailhache, in 2009 it launched the Jersey Law Course for lawyers seeking to qualify as advocates or solicitors in Jersey. In October 2010, it launched tuition for students enrolled for an LL.B degree or the Certificate of Higher Education with the University of London (formerly the University of London International Programmes). A team of experienced academics from UK and French universities provide live LL.B tuition to students in the Island, 5pm Thursday to 2pm Sunday each weekend. LL.B and CertHE students also have seminars with a local lawyer one evening a week. More recently, we have started running the LL.M and the PhD, for those who want a postgraduate degree in Law. Students also have the option to study individual modules with us, if it would be useful for work or they are particularly interested in the topic, without committing to a complete Law degree.
We teach undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate students, including practising lawyers on the island. We have a high pass rate with some of the highest achieving students on the University of London's LL.B. Our students have won international mediation and mooting competitions, competing against students from all over the world. Our students also have the opportunity to study the Double Degree; two years with us and two years studying French Law in France.
As well as teaching rooms and a student common room, Law House is also home to the Island's Law Library, which visitors can access within office hours.
We hire out our seminar rooms for events during the week, and if you would like to book one, you can find out our prices on our website and contact us via the email address below.
