There is currently no change in the roads surrounding the incident on Pier Road.

Pier Road, South Hill, and Fort Regent Road remain closed to both pedestrian and vehicular access.

Work is underway to move the cordon and open these roads and an update will be given tomorrow (Tuesday, 13 December) at midday in relation to the access of these roads.

Until that time, they cannot be accessed, and Islanders are advised to avoid the area to reduce the workload of the officers at the scene.

We’re sorry to hear that Doddie Weir OBE has died.

After announcing his MND diagnosis in 2017, Doddie became an inspiration to so many, raising awareness, fundraising and campaigning tirelessly on behalf of people with MND.

Doddie set up the My Name’5 Doddie Foundation which has funded MND research projects across the UK and generously donated to the MND Association’s support grant programme.

Our thoughts are with Doddie’s wife Kathy, his 3 sons; Hamish, Angus and Ben, his family and friends.

The effects of the last couple of years have been truly staggering. To think this little safe haven we call home needs two women’s shelters. Massive well done to the Jersey Women's Refuge for providing safety and stability for those that have none.

Tomorrow, Saturday 15 October, we’ll be supporting Restart a Heart Day, by teaching Islanders basic CPR lifesaving skills on Brook Street (off King Street) and at Les Quennevais Sports Centre. We’ll be there between 12pm and 2pm with colleagues from the HCS Resuscitation Service. The teams will teach you what to do if someone collapses and stops breathing normally.

Restart a Heart Day falls on or around 16 October every year and the aim of the annual event is to increase awareness of cardiac arrests and increase the number of people trained in CPR.

Sanctuary Trust
Demand for our services has been at an all-time high in the past couple of years. We anticipate this is only set to increase with the cost of living and housing crisis the island is experiencing.

Since the beginning of 2022, we have supported 21 new residents. Sadly, we have had to turn away 25 people, because we’ve been at capacity. Some of these people were added to our waiting list and were later offered a place. Even if accommodation is not available at that time, our support workers will do all that they can to assist these individuals with whatever they may need help with. We also offer food and blankets, if necessary.

Many of the residents we support came to us from unsuitable living arrangements, such as sofa surfing or sleeping in a car or tent. The covid pandemic has undoubtedly put more people at risk of becoming homeless and needing to access shelter accommodation.

Sanctuary Trust - Our team
These are just a few of the faces who work tirelessly for Sanctuary Trust and the men we support.

Without our small team’s boundless energy, dedication, care and selflessness, we’d be lost.

As well as our support workers, we have an incredible network of bank support workers. Together they help our residents get back on their feet and on their way to living independently again.

We are witnessing so many success stories and we contribute a significant part of this to our great team who are working with and supporting these men.

You rock!

Dr Patricia Tumelty tells us in a recent Jersey Evening Post article how Mind Jersey is reminded daily through our ‘mental health peer support services' and our ‘carers support groups’ that just a little bit of interest in someone’s story can make a huge difference to how they feel and how they think about themselves and their wider community.

Mind Jersey & Jersey Post recently delivered a mail out to every household in Jersey during Mental Health Awareness Week. We had over 600 responses on the topic of with responses from Islanders whose ages ranged from 12 years old to 93.

Last year Julie, who is living with MND, took part in our Mission 5000 challenge. She cycled 100 miles on her static bike at home throughout the month.

“Motor neurone disease affects my upper limbs, speech, swallowing, my motor skills, reflexes. Five years ago, I was still climbing mountains and walked my dogs daily. I am kind of lucky, because my MND is slower progressing than other forms of the disease. There is hope a cure will be found, but not without more funding and research.”

Join Mission 5000 and cycle, run, walk, swim, row – whatever you fancy – as many miles as you can during September. Get your fundraising pack here: www.mndassociation.org/mission5000!

The hottest part of today is expected to be 5-6pm, with a forecast of a record-breaking high for Jersey of 38C.

While many of us enjoy the warmer weather it’s vital we follow simple precautions and look after those at greatest risk including elderly people, babies, and young children as well as those with serious chronic conditions such as heart or breathing problems.

Precautions:
▶️ Shutting windows, shades, blinds, or curtains to keep your rooms as cool as possible.
▶️ If possible, stay out of the sun for long periods and avoid the hottest part of the day, which could be later in the afternoon.
▶️ Wearing sunscreen and hats when outside.
▶️ Having cool baths or showers.
▶️ Drinking plenty of water. Avoid tea, coffee, and alcohol.
▶️ Wearing loose, cool clothing.
▶️ Help those who are likely to struggle in the heat.
▶️ Ensure that pets are not kept in vehicles.

Ways to spot someone who may be suffering from heat-related illnesses:
▶️ Heat cramps
▶️ Small rashes
▶️ Dizziness and fainting
▶️ Exhaustion
▶️ Disorientation and confusion
▶️ Hot dry skin

The Emergency Services will be working hard during this spell of hot weather. Islanders are asked to only call for an ambulance in a real emergency.
