Where Renaissance heritage meets contemporary vision. ✨

The exhibition The Shape of Time presents a major survey of Barry X Ball at Basilica di San Giorgio Maggiore.

Curated by Bob Nickas and coordinated by Carmelo A. Grasso, the exhibition brings together 23 sculptures- most shown publicly for the first time - creating a dialogue between advanced digital technologies, traditional craftsmanship, and the architecture of Andrea Palladio.

Spread throughout the basilica, the works explore portraiture, spirituality, and art history, including Barry X Ball's ongoing engagement with historical sculptural traditions and his reinterpretations of iconic masterpieces. The exhibition offers a compelling encounter between past and present in one of Venice's most remarkable cultural settings.

In the heart of Piazza San Marco, art and architecture meet in a dialogue across life and contemporary art.

Now on view at SMAC Venice:
• Lee Ufan
9 May – 22 November 2026

A major exhibition spanning more than 70 years of the artist’s practice, featuring paintings, sculptures, and a new site-specific installation.

• Alighiero Boetti
7 May – 22 November 2026
A landmark presentation of one of Italy’s most influential contemporary artists, bringing together key works from across his career.

Throughout the exhibition, Boetti investigates themes of order and chaos, authorship and collaboration, control and chance, time and transformation. Rather than presenting the artist as the sole creator, his works reveal art as a process shaped by systems, collective effort, and the world itself.

A compelling overview of one of the most influential Italian artists of the twentieth century, whose practice continues to resonate through its engagement with geopolitics, identity, collaboration, and the complexity of contemporary life.

Direction: glorious, sparkling discoveries.

Keep moving, but slowly. The real discoveries don’t announce themselves, they shimmer, waiting to be noticed.

Asymmetrical symmetry.

In Venice, balance is never rigid. It shifts, adapts, negotiates with water, light, and time. Arches don’t always mirror perfectly, façades bend to constraints, perspectives slip, and yet, everything holds together.

Not despite the imbalance, but because of it.

This is a city where harmony is constructed through variation, where imperfection becomes structure and the dance of its ancient glory.
