Few English country houses embody the quiet grandeur of the Georgian age as completely as Ombersley Court. Set within rolling Worcestershire parkland on the edge of the village of Ombersley, the Grade I listed house was commissioned by the 1st Lord Sandys and designed by the distinguished architect Francis Smith of Warwick in the early eighteenth century. Replacing earlier buildings on land long associated with the Sandys family, the house became one of the finest aristocratic seats in the Midlands.

Architecturally, Ombersley Court is a masterclass in restrained Baroque and early Georgian design. Its elegant proportions, grand hall, sweeping staircase and richly panelled interiors reflect both the confidence and sophistication of Britain’s landed elite during the period. For almost three centuries it remained the home of the Sandys family, accumulating an important collection of paintings, furnishings and historical artefacts that reflected generations of patronage and public service.

Following an extensive restoration in recent years, Ombersley Court has re-emerged as one of England’s most remarkable private country houses. Surrounded by historic parkland and commanding views across the Worcestershire landscape, it stands today as an enduring testament to Georgian craftsmanship, aristocratic history and the timeless appeal of the English country estate.

Approximately 60 kilometres from Paris, this exceptional eighteenth century château stands within 68 hectares of parkland in the Île de France countryside.

Built in the early 1750s for the financier Jean Baptiste Chabert, the estate is centred upon one of France’s earliest romantic landscape parks. Designed in the 1760s by Louis Carrogis Carmontelle, the 18 hectare walled park predates his celebrated work at Parc Monceau and helped shape the emergence of the English landscape style in France.

Carefully restored in the 1960s by Emmanuel Motte of Maison Jansen, the château later acquired a notable cultural legacy, welcoming figures including Helmut Newton, Sophia Loren, Céline Dion and Jean Dujardin.

The Old Rectory at Coberley sits with a composed presence in the Churn Valley, its late-Georgian form defined by clear symmetry and finely cut Cotswold stone.

Completed in the 1820s, the house is confident but never grandiose, its elevations arranged with that particular English understanding of proportion and calm.

Among Derbyshire’s most enchanting country houses, Radbourne Hall occupies a special place. Built in the early eighteenth century and set within an idyllic parkland landscape, the house combines architectural restraint with an atmosphere of extraordinary warmth and comfort. While its handsome red brick exterior speaks to the confidence of the Georgian period, it is the interiors that have long captivated visitors.

Few houses demonstrate the enduring influence of John Fowler more successfully. His celebrated decoration at Radbourne Hall brought together English country house elegance, colour and intimacy in a way that felt both sophisticated and entirely unforced. Rather than imposing a fashionable scheme, Fowler enhanced the character of the house, creating rooms of remarkable charm and timeless appeal.

What makes Radbourne Hall particularly exceptional today is the care with which it has been preserved. Under the stewardship of Lady Chichester, Fowler’s vision has been sensitively maintained and restored, ensuring that the house remains not as a museum piece, but as a living and evolving family home. It stands as a testament to the importance of thoughtful custodianship and to the enduring beauty of one of England’s great decorative partnerships between house and designer.

Overlooking the River Shannon in County Limerick, Glin Castle is one of Ireland’s most enduring family estates. Home to the FitzGerald family for more than seven centuries, it served as the ancestral seat of the Knights of Glin, a branch of the powerful Geraldine dynasty.

The present house, largely dating from the late eighteenth century, combines a restrained Georgian exterior with elegant neoclassical interiors. Fine plasterwork, Irish furniture and an important collection of paintings reflect the cultural confidence of the period, while the surrounding gardens and parkland provide a fitting setting above the estuary.

Despite centuries of political and social change, Glin has remained remarkably intact. Today, under the stewardship of Catherine FitzGerald and Dominic West, the estate continues to balance preservation with modern life, ensuring its place among Ireland’s most significant historic houses.

Few houses so convincingly embody the evolution of the English country home. With origins dating to the fifteenth century, this Grade II listed residence has been shaped by centuries of architectural refinement, creating a home of exceptional character and historical depth.

Constructed from warm local stone, the house retains a wealth of period features including carved panelling, substantial fireplaces and a rare medieval spiral stone staircase. Sensitive restoration has preserved its historic fabric while ensuring it remains suited to contemporary living.

Set within approximately 2.47 acres, the gardens combine formal structure with natural beauty. Pleached lime avenues, mature trees, an orchard and a secluded swimming pool garden create a landscape as compelling as the house itself.
