It is a fulfilling experience to enjoy the calm, the light and the warm embrace of Rome early in the morning while your steps lead you to the loggia of Palazzo della Sapienza. Whether you are going to reasearch into old documents Archivio di Stato di Roma or just to enjoy a privileged view over the masterpiece of Sant’Ivo alla Sapienza by Francesco Borromini, it is even more beautiful to have brighter light surrounding you. In fact, the staircase and loggias have been recently restored, changing the 19th-fashioned orange color into the cream white of the plaster.

«Night doesn’t fall in Rome; it rises from the city’s heart, from the gloomy little alleys and courtyards
where the sun never gets much more than a brief look-in, and then, like the mist from the Tiber,
it creeps over the rooftops and spreads up into the hills.» C. Llewellyn

The Octagonal Hall of the Museo Nazionale Romano has a complex and varied history, whose stratification is reflected in the present state of the architecture.
Belonging to the same complex of the Baths of Diocletian, built under Emperor Maximian between 298 and 306 AD, the hall is covered by a majestic “umbrella dome” (“a ombrello”) with a diameter of about 22 meters, one of the largest in the Roman world. Facing piazza della Repubblica, the Octagonal Hall of the Baths of Diocletian (Museo Nazionale Romano) is the seat of the recently established Museum of Rescued Art (Museo dell’Arte Salvata), conceived to showcase periodically changing artworks saved from looting, theft, illicit trafficking, conflict contexts or natural disasters. The current display of newly recovered artworks, titled “New Recoveries” (Nuovi Recuperi), runs until 11 January 2026 and presents more than 100 archaeological objects, spanning a wide chronological range and originating from diverse cultural contexts, including Etruscan, Roman, Greek, Magna Graecian, Hellenistic, and Egyptian. These looted artworks are ultimately destined to be returned and displayed in their territories of origin. Therefore, the Museum of Rescued Art may be welcomed as an opportunity to reflect on the intangible value of cultural heritage for the identity of peoples and civilizations.
