The conclave to elect the 267th Pope will begin on May 7th, following the conclusion of the Novemdiales Masses to pray for the eternal repose of the late Pope Francis.

The date was set on Monday morning by the approximately 180 cardinals present (just over a hundred of whom are electors) gathered for the fifth General Congregation in the Vatican.

The conclave will take place in the Vatican’s Sistine Chapel, which will remain closed to visitors during those days.

Today, the Church bids farewell to a pastor who taught us by his words and even more by his example — calling all of us to a Church that is poor and for the poor, a Church that reaches out with joy, and a Church that never ceases to proclaim the infinite mercy of God.

“Francis, faithful servant of the Gospel, may choirs of angels lead you into paradise.”

Pope Francis—a humble shepherd, a tireless advocate for the marginalized, and a true embodiment of Ignatian spirituality.

As we pay our respects to his body, we give thanks for his profound witness to faith, justice, and mercy. His papacy was marked by compassion for the poor, dialogue with the world, and a deep commitment to the Gospel’s call to serve. May his legacy continue to inspire us to build a more just and loving Church.

"Nothing is more practical than finding God, than falling in love in a quite absolute, final way."

Let us pray for the repose of his soul and for the Church he served so faithfully.

Requiescat in pace.

Born Jorge Mario Bergolio on December 17, 1936, the man who would become Pope Francis was the son of Mario Jose Bergoglio, an Italian immigrant, and Marta Regina, an Argentinian from an Italian Family. As the eldest of 5 children, Jorge had both a love of family, and a passion for following the steps of Christ.

Entering the Society of Jesus in 1958 at age 21, Bergolio was ordained to the priesthood in 1969, made Master of Novices in 1971, became the Provincial of Argentina and Uruguay in 1973, then ordained a bishop in 1992. He was elevated to Cardinal in 2001, became the president of the Bishops Conference of Argentina in 2005, and elected the 266th Pope of the Roman Catholic Church by a conclave of 115 Cardinals on March 13, 2013.

He took the name "Francis".

Rest in Peace, brother.

...said the early Jesuit Jerome Nadal. He was referring, on one level, to the world outside of churches and monasteries, but also to the multitudes of God’s people and the expanse of human cultures. As Jesuit leaders explained at their General Congregation in 2008, “The entire world becomes the object of our interest and concern.” (GC35, D.2, No.23)
