In spite of everything, despite the disconnect between the cruelty which life demands of us and that which we must do as souls blessed with a heart, let us reflect on the fact that today, roughly 2000 years ago, God became Man with a promise that all will be well, that love prevails today and in the end of time: sicut erat in principio, et nunc, et semper, et in saecula saeculorum. Peace be upon us, Merry Merry Christmas!

It's Lent! ✞

Since the earliest times of the Church (and Christianity for that matter), there was evidence of some kind of Lenten preparation for Easter.

For instance, St. Irenaeus (d. 203) wrote to Pope St. Victor I, commenting on the celebration of Easter and the differences between practices in the EAST and the WEST: "The dispute is not only about the day, but also about the actual character of the fast. Some think that they ought to fast for one day, some for two, others for still more; some make their 'day' last 40 hours on end. Such variation in the observance did not originate in our own day, but very much earlier, in the time of our forefathers" (Eusebius, History of the Church, V, 24).

When Rufinus translated this passage from Greek into Latin, the punctuation made between "40" and "hours" made the meaning to appear to be "40 days, twenty-four hours a day." The importance of the passage, nevertheless, remains that since the time of "our forefathers" — always an expression for the apostles — a 40-day period of Lenten preparation existed.

Martin Luther posts the 95 Theses
~OCTOBER 31, 1517~

500 Year Anniversary of the Reformation.

When people stopped going to Martin Luther for the sacrament of penance, taking instead that trip downtown to the Indulgence Stand, the Augustinian Monk knew something was up.

He had no plans to start his own church.
He had no plans to divide Christendom.
He was very much a sincere Catholic.

But instead of going down as the Patron Saint of Reformers, Luther responded to the smug attacks of his pompous and corrupt Church officials in anger.

A single moment changes History.
An emotional landslide divided Unity.
An honest love made irreversible passion.

Changing his stance into an autonomous theology, Martin Luther garnered support from people tired of what appeared to be a legalistic Christianity.

Henry VIII needed a divorce.
Puritans hated the ancient ritualism.
People were tired of the Pope.

The avalanche gave us the 30,000+ "Christian" denominations today which reject the 2,000 years of apostolic teachings on "literal presence of Christ in the Eucharist," the removal of books from the Bible to conform to Protestant theology, and the foundations of "Faith and the Bible Alone" to FREE Christianity from the shackles of apostolic communion.

Christianity will never be the same.

Martin Luther is ordained Priest
~APRIL 4, 1507~

Erfurt, Germany: Though not ordained by the Pope himself (Leo X) as seen in the comic, Luther joined the Christian priesthood at the age of 21 after surviving a near-fatal lightning strike exclaming: "Help me, St. Anne! I will become a monk!"

True to his word, he gave away all his possessions and entered the monastic life; however, like any good Christian, he would come to question what it meant to believe. Plunging into prayer, fasting, and ascetic practices—going without sleep, enduring bone-chilling cold, and flagellation, he later commented, "If anyone earned heaven by the life of a monk, it was I."

There is a popular saying that Luther, who frequented the Sacrament of Reconciliation (confession) to ease his thoughts of unworthiness, told his Priestly confessor that "God is angry with me." The confessor immediately understood his scrupulosity and answered, "no Martin, it is you who is angry with God."

Noticing the abuse of the sale in Indulgences ("Once the coin into the coffer clings, a soul from purgatory heavenward springs!"), Luther called for a public debate that questioned the authority of the Pope and the Christian church.

Spreading like wildfire, nations that found no material use in communion with the Pope quickly came to ally with the idea of separation. Within the following years Henry VIII divorced his wife and his church to create Anglicanism, while others no longer believed that Christ was literally present in the Holy Mass--a reality commonly believed for 1,500 years.

Luther later on married a runaway nun, Katharina von Bora as future Protestants began to remove Biblical books that were against "Faith Alone" (Sola Fidei) and "Bible Only" (Sola Scriptura)

Galileo endorses Heliocentrism
~LATE MARCH 1610~

Through observations with a new telescope, namely the phases of Venus and the moons of Jupiter, Galileo realizes it as true.

Yet he knew he could not prove its only valid scientific objection, one that remained until 1838: that of observable shifts in the star's positions vis-a-vis the sun (stellar parallax).

Angry at how leading scientists would not even look through his telescope and intent to make History, Galileo preached his findings to correct both peers and the Church.

Still recovering from a "Bible Only" Reformation, the Catholic Church would not drop the geocentric view for science and scripture without conclusive proof. The rest, as we know it, is history.
