📱Most people reach for their phone within minutes of waking up. If that sounds familiar, this is worth reading.
In the first 30 to 45 minutes after waking, your body undergoes one of its most important hormonal processes of the day. Cortisol, your body’s primary stress and alertness hormone, rises sharply in what is known as the Cortisol Awakening Response. This surge is entirely natural and essential. It activates your immune system, regulates blood sugar, sharpens cognitive function and provides the natural energy your body needs to function well. Research also links a well functioning Cortisol Awakening Response to better memory consolidation, stronger emotional regulation and a more resilient stress response overall.
The problem is what happens when we immediately expose ourselves to our phones during this critical window.
When you open emails, check social media or scroll through the news the moment you wake up, you are introducing a flood of external stimuli to a nervous system that has not yet completed its natural awakening process. Studies have found that social media use within the first 30 minutes of waking is associated with significantly elevated stress levels throughout the day, even when the content appears neutral. Done repeatedly, this disruption drives persistent fatigue, blunted immunity, blood sugar instability, worsening anxiety and disrupted sleep.
Protecting your first 20 to 30 minutes from screens, getting natural light, moving your body and hydrating before looking at any device are among the most evidence backed things you can do for your cortisol. Natural light in particular helps anchor your entire circadian rhythm, which governs not just cortisol but sleep, metabolism and immune function.
Your morning sets the hormonal tone for everything that follows. It deserves more than a scroll. 🌅

This Spring 2026, FirstMed partnered with The American University of Rome (AUR) for "Real Projects" a program where students act as strategic collaborators to solve high-level business and operational challenges.

Focusing on areas like telemedicine, front desk workflow, and strategic expansion, this cohort analyzed industry trends to provide fresh, data-driven perspectives. Their work helps us elevate standards across our clinics in Rome, Budapest, and Milan while preparing them for the professional world.

We are proud of the growth shown by these students. A big thank you to Professor Bisan Abdulkader for leading this exceptional cohort and fostering such a vital connection between the classroom and the professional world.

We look forward to seeing where these bright professionals will go next!
