Moriyasu held up a whiteboard with a number on it. His players knew exactly what it meant. Japan were 2-1 down against the 7th-ranked team in the world with two minutes left on the clock. They equalized 89 seconds later.

Those numbers appear to map to pre-rehearsed plays, a coded system Japan's players know by heart. Opponents can watch from the touchline, cameras can broadcast it live, and nobody on the other bench can decode it. A shout or gesture from the sideline can be read by anyone with football knowledge. A number on a whiteboard cannot.

Japan ranked 18th coming into this World Cup. Last night they drew 2-2 with the Netherlands, 7th in the world and three-time World Cup finalists. In 2022, Japan beat Germany 2-1 and Spain 1-0 in the group stage to reach the last 16. The two biggest upsets of the Qatar World Cup, neither by accident.

In 1993, Japan had no professional football league. The J-League launched that year with 10 clubs. Now the competition runs three tiers and 60 teams, drawing 12.5 million fans in 2024, a new annual record. The number of Japanese players in European leagues has grown 90% in five years. National broadcaster NHK counted 114 Japanese players competing in Europe at the start of this season.

Moriyasu has built a match preparation system around coded playbooks. The whiteboard is not improvised, it is the plan. Japan's coaching staff builds a numbered playbook for every opponent: which runs to make from set pieces, when to change shape, when to press as a unit. All of it drilled until players respond to a single number from 30 meters away. The same approach ran in 2022, with substitutes already knowing their roles before they stepped off the bench.

Japan began building its professional football system 33 years ago. Eight consecutive World Cup appearances later, they come back from 2-1 down in the final minutes against three-time World Cup finalists. The whiteboard with the number on it is just what this level of preparation looks like from the outside.
