Mark your calendar! Staircase to the Moon returns this Friday. 🌕
From 3rd April 2026, the iconic Staircase to the Moon will once again light up the tidal flats across Broome and parts of the Pilbara coast.
This natural phenomenon occurs when the rising full moon reflects across exposed mudflats at very low tide, creating the illusion of a glowing staircase reaching up into the night sky. It’s one of the North West’s most anticipated sights, and it only appears for a few nights each month.
April 2026 (Broome times):
🌕 Friday 3 April at 6:27pm
🌕 Saturday 4 April at 7:04pm
🌕 Sunday 5 April at 7:45pm
In Broome, the event often comes with night markets, food stalls and a lively foreshore atmosphere. Further along the coast, places like Port Hedland, Onslow and Dampier offer quieter vantage points to take it all in.
Top tip ℹ️ It’s not just about the full moon, you need a very low tide for the staircase effect. Arrive early, check local tide times and settle in before moonrise.
