KALARI LAB EUROPE (opening May 2023)
RESEARCH AND TRAINING CENTRE IN SOUTH ITALY
I am very excited to announce the opening of the first traditional pit Kalari in Europe! Kalari Lab has teamed up with Yav Centro Yogayurvedico in Puglia, South Italy under the leadership of Massimo Yav Capuano and with the collaboration of Gurukkal CM Sherif and his sons Gurukkal Zameel and Gurukkal Shahabas, to create the centre of training, treatment and research into the martial and healing art of Kalarippayat!
Over the next years we shall be running intensive retreats, providing and teaching Kalari Chikitsa treatment and beginning a research project: to excavate the essence of Kalari and provide a sound evidential base for the practice.
Current trends in Kalari are focusing on the acrobatic and performative aspects of the art - in our opinion a narrow and fruitless endeavour - instead we shall pursue a path of rigorous research and through this, bring the scientific method that it is Kalari into the modern world of sports science and rehabilitation.
Along with the traditional earth-floored pit Kalari, we shall be creating a centre for Panchakarma treatment and in time cooking and exporting our own Ayurvedic oils and medicines.
This is a very exciting time for Kalari and particularly for Kalari in Europe.
The work begins with a 30 day deep immersion into the art beginning on May 1st this year and we still have a few places available.
Please check out this link for all information and feel free to message us to learn more.

Kalari is arguably the root of all Asian Martial Arts, with its roots in ancient tribal practices at least 5000 years old as well as ties to Siddha healing and Ayurvedic medicine. It is high time the world comes to see the essential truth and scientific validity of this practice.
Kalari Lab , together with its collaborators in Puglia and Kerala are working tirelessly to bring this about!
See you in Puglia!

Kalari REVEALED | Hidden Fighting Applications (Part 1)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kPaO5ugxR_U
Today we begin something I am very excited to share with you all. In this new series 'Kalari REVEALED' we shall be looking at the secret and hidden martial applications inside the forms and movements of Kalarippayattu.
Southern Style / Adi Murai / Varma Ati - as is practised in Southern Kerala, contains many martial techniques which are fairly obvious to see in the practice. In Northern and Central style however, these applications are far more mysterious.
In actual fact, as a student, the application is not usually taught. Instead the student practices the techniques again and again, until they become 2nd nature and deeply embedded in the body's muscle memory.
Then, should it be required to use them in a conflict situation, these movement patterns are so easily repeated, that they are essentially effortless.
Part 1: Secrets of the LOHARS
Today then we shall examine 2 techniques taken from the Lohars exercises of Central style Kalarippayattu. The fIrst of these is used to defend against an opponent coming at you from behind; the 2nd for when the opponent is in front of you.
PLEASE REMEMBER - KALARI IS ONLY EVER TO BE USED IN SELF-DEFENCE - IT IS ALWAYS BETTER TO AVOID THE FIGHT IF YOU CAN.
Please take care if practising these techniques and use a crash-mat or mattress as we have done. Falling onto the floor directly can cause irreparable damage - especially to the Coccyx (tail-bone) as shown in the exercises today.
HAVE FUN

What is Kalari ?
Kalari is both a Martial Art and Yoga practice, beyond that, it is also a system of treatment and manual therapy, essentially the 5000 year old sister science to Ayurveda, originating in South India and embedded in a living Martial Arts tradition.
Practice of Kalari leads to significant changes in physical attributes (flexibility, flow, power, grace) as well as psychological attributes (confidence, grounding and focus).
Kalari contains an extensive and thorough knowledge of the body and its psycho-physical processes; a structured and progressive system of total body conditioning both in terms of training and treatment.
