Some encounters are meant to live only in memories…

Two Greater Racket-tailed Drongos seemed to say —
“Vipul ji… capturing us isn’t that easy!”

Many attempts… endless waiting…
Yet this time, they gave me no chance.
No perfect frame, no ideal pose — just their cleverness and my defeat!

This image is from my archives, 6–7 years old…
A memory, a lesson —
In wildlife, patience is the greatest weapon.

Not every frame is given…
Some frames have to be earned.

🐦 Brown:winged Kingfisher – The Hidden Jewel of Mangroves
Deep inside the tangled silence of mangroves lives a kingfisher not meant for the ordinary eye… The Brown:winged Kingfisher — rare, resilient, and a true guardian of tidal wilderness.
• A true mangrove specialist : rarely seen outside tidal forests like the Sundarbans, making every sighting feel like a privilege.
• Unlike most kingfishers, it doesn’t rely only on fish – it feeds on crabs, mudskippers, molluscs, and even small reptiles, perfectly adapted to intertidal life.
• Its massive coral:red bill is not just striking—it’s designed to crush hard:shelled prey like crabs.
• The electric blue back + warm buff underparts + brown wings create a rare color combination, making it one of the most visually distinct kingfishers in India.
• Known for its solitary and secretive behavior, often sitting motionless deep inside mangrove canopies.
• Its call is a loud, ringing “kek:kek:kek”, echoing across silent creeks—often heard before it’s seen.
• Nests are built in mud banks or termite mounds, carefully chosen to stay safe from tidal flooding.
• Plays a critical role as a bio:indicator of healthy mangrove ecosystems—its presence signals ecological balance.
• Unlike riverine kingfishers, it has adapted to saline and brackish water environments, showcasing remarkable evolutionary specialization.
• Considered Near Threatened, mainly due to rapid loss of mangrove habitats and coastal development.
• Its elusive nature and restricted range make it a “dream species” for birders and wildlife photographers.
