Breathing exercise to improve lung capacity
In this covid time we have all been practicing taking stream inhalation, drinking different kadhas but one of the most important things which can help us all is to do some breathing exercises which can help to improve our lung capacity. As we all know that this corona virus affects our lung and reduces the oxygen saturation in our body. It is very important to strengthen the respiratory muscles. There are a few breathing exercises which help in strengthening your muscles and improves your lung function. These exercises can be done by any age group including corona affected and non-affected people.
1] Pursed lip breathing
Follow these steps to try pursed lip breathing:
Relax in a seated position with your neck and shoulder muscles unclenched.
Breathe in slowly through your nose for several counts with your mouth closed. (Your nose warms and humidifies the air before it reaches the lungs — breathing in through your mouth does not accomplish this.)
Before exhaling, purse your lips, as if you were going to blow out a candle.
Keeping your lips pursed, breathe out all of the air in your lungs slowly.
Try to exhale for a longer number of counts than you inhaled.
Repeat several times.
2] Diaphragmatic breathing
Also called abdominal breathing or belly breathing encourages complete oxygen exchange.
Follow these steps to try diaphragmatic breathing
Lie down on the back on the floor or the bed with a pillow beneath your knees and head.
Put one hand above the belly button and the other hand on the heart.
Inhale through your nose and notice how your stomach moves as you breathe.
Slowly exhale through your mouth engaging your stomach muscles, pushing all the air out of the belly.
3] Using Spirometer Technique
Spirometer helps in strengthening your intercostal muscle which is present between your ribs. These muscles become strong and eventually improve your lung function. The Spirometer provides feedback and shows your lung capacity levels like 600, 900 and 1200 and through regular practice it will improve your lung function.
The Spirometer has 3 balls with 3 different colors and it is easily available at medical stores. The spirometer should be kept at your mouth level and shouldn’t keep the spirometer up or down position.
Do this exercise, while sitting and don’t lie down. Keep the mouthpiece inside your mouth and try to take air inside like how you suck. While taking air inside, the balls start raising up. Once the ball rises up, try to hold the ball on the top for 2 to 3 seconds and slowly exhale and the balls come down.
So, one can lift only one ball at a time and others can lift all the 3 balls at a time. In this process don’t be in a hurry in lifting all these balls. It might cause spacism. You should do it slowly and try to lift one ball after the other ball and between each inspiration try to maintain 2 seconds of rest and then repeat for 10 times.
This exercise should be done at least twice a day.
Points to be noted:
Try to avoid sitting or lying down for a long time – Try walking a few steps.
While lying down, you should not rest on our back.
While lying down you can either turn to the left or right side, as per your convenience.
If you rest on your back, some part of your lung will be compressed and air entry will be less.
The highly recommended position is lying down on your tummy.
If you lie down your tummy, the air entry will be good and recovery will be faster.
It’s important to check your oxygen saturation levels with pulse oximeters.
What is Mucormycosis?
It is a serious but rare fungal infection also called as Black Fungus.
It is Caused by group of molds called mucormycetes. These molds live throughout the environment but it affects only if the immunity of the person is very much suppressed.
Who is at risk for mucormycosis?
In the post covid phase few patients are complaining of this black fungus. This is seen due to suppressed immunity of the person which is happening because:
* Sever covid infection reduces the immunity of the person.
Excessive use of steroid in treatment of covid suppress the
immunity
* Anti-inflammatory injection given to serious patient of covid
suppress the immunity
* In patient of diabetes, Cancer, HIV/AIDS where immunity is
suppressed.
How is mucormycosis spread?
These infections are usually acquired when spores from the molds are breathed in (inhaled) or, less commonly, enter the body through a cut in the skin.
This is not contagious.

Symptoms of Mucormycosis
One-sided facial swelling.
Headache.
Nasal or sinus congestion.
Nose obstruction
Black lesions on nasal bridge or upper inside of mouth that quickly become more severe.
Fever.
Swelling of eyes, around eyes
Loss of vision
It is important to treat it in initial phase otherwise this can be life threatening.

3. Sun Stroke
Heat stroke or hyperthermia is a common summer disease that results from prolonged exposure to high temperatures.
It is preceded by signs of heat exhaustion like headaches, dizziness and weakness and results in unconsciousness, organ failure and eventually death.

Outside cooling of the body with the help of water, cold air or ice packs.
Wear loose fitting clothes
Drink plenty of fluids
Limit time spent working or exercising in heat.
4. Dehydration
This is one of the most common problems that occur in summer when water intake does not compensate for water loss.
