Finished a heavy leg day this morning and walked into the kitchen looking for protein and water, in that order.

Three eggs, leftover steak from last night, sourdough, black coffee.

The creatine question comes up constantly with my patients — "do I need it after 50?"

Short answer, yes. Long answer, especially after 50.

Muscle responds slower at our age. Recovery takes longer. Every legal lever you can pull for strength preservation, you pull.

What I use is Max Strength HCI — the HCl form sits better with me than monohydrate ever did, no bloat, no stomach issues, and the pumps on training days are noticeably better.

Protein on the plate. Creatine in the stack. Weights on the bar. That's the recipe.

Three signs your belly fat is hormonal, not just dietary.

One — it sits in the midsection specifically while your arms and legs stay relatively lean. That's a cortisol and insulin pattern, not a calorie pattern.

Two — you wake up between 2 and 4am regularly. Cortisol rhythm is off, which means recovery is off, which means body composition stays stuck.

Three — your strength is dropping in the gym even when your effort isn't. That's a testosterone signal.

Food matters. Training matters. But if hormones are the bottleneck, eating less won't fix it.

Get the full panel. Total T, free T, SHBG, estradiol, fasting insulin, cortisol. Stop guessing.

Got the truck running for about 40 seconds last night before it died again.

My youngest came out in the garage, watched it sputter, and said "that's it?"

Yes son. That's it. That's the whole evening.

He walked back inside unimpressed.

I sat on the bumper for another twenty minutes feeling like I'd won something.

Saw a 51-year-old patient this morning who told me he gained 18 pounds in two years "doing nothing different."

That's the problem.

At 30, doing nothing different works. At 50, doing nothing different is how you lose 10 pounds of muscle and gain 18 pounds of fat without noticing the trade.

Your metabolism didn't betray you.

It just stopped being subsidized by your hormones.

The fix isn't dramatic. Lift heavy twice a week. Walk after meals. Hit protein. Sleep like an adult.

Boring works. Boring is the whole game after 45.

If your workouts stopped working after 45, the problem usually isn't effort.

It's recovery, hormones, and inputs.

I lift four days a week now, not six. Heavier, slower, more intentional. I sleep seven hours minimum. I eat protein at every meal like it's a job.

And I added Max Strength HCI to my training stack this year — creatine HCl form, so I get the strength support without the bloat and water weight monohydrate used to give me.

Noticed better pumps, drier muscle look, faster between-set recovery.

Train like the age you are, not the age you were. The results follow.
