Our partner NGO, SHODH is helping transform the lives of farmers in Bundelkhand, Uttar Pradesh and Shri Sathya Sai District, Andhra Pradesh. Hari Om Rajput, a farmer from Jhansi has two acres of land. One acre out of this is rocky and unsuitable for traditional crops. He struggled with frequent crop failure in this patch due to unpredictable rains. Through SHODH NGO’s intervention, he was introduced to climate-resilient Barnyard Millet. By cultivating this new crop on his previously barren land, he successfully harvested and sold eight quintals at a price above the government’s MSP. This success has not only provided him with a new source of income but has also inspired him to become an advocate for millet cultivation among other farmers in his village.

Day 1 of the Jivitputrika or Jitiya fast, observed for the long life and well being of children, encompasses the tradition of Nahai- Khai. After bathing and pooja, mothers eat a Satwic meal. The stars of this meal are Noni ka saag (purslane), satputiya (a variant of torai) ki sabzi and Madua (Ragi/Finger millet) ki roti. These traditional dishes hold a deep significance. The resilience and strength of these foods is directly symbolic of the resilience and strength of a mother’s love for her children and her hopes for them to be healthy and strong.
This isn’t just a meal; it’s a testament to how generations past intuitively preserved food knowledge and integrated it into meaningful, health-promoting traditions.

Our Millet Story
Millets for Health is born out of a journey of personal health and transformation and has grown into a social enterprise working on the revival of millets, the ancient Indian Super Foods. We work on encouraging the work of millet cultivation in dry and drought prone regions of the country and source our products from small farmers & organisations practicing sustainable agriculture in these regions.
Millets are highly nutritious and healthy foods that were once a staple in the country but due to a multitude of reasons have become less popular now. Millets are high on several essential micronutrients like Calcium, Iron, Magnesium & Phosphorous, are naturally high on fibre and antioxidants. They are compl ex carbohydrates and are also helpful in prevention and management of lifestyle diseases. Due to all these reasons they are also known as Nutri-Cereals.
Apart from all the health benefits, millets are also great for the environment and farmers. They are also naturally pest resistant and organic crops. They need no pesticides or fertilizers; can grow on very poor soil and need very little water to thrive – traits that make them a godsend for poor farmers from dry and drought prone regions. Millets also have a very low environmental impact and make a great case for climate resistant and sustainable agricultural practices.
In addition to sale of superior quality, unpolished millets and millet based products, Millets for Health also works with end consumers to increase awareness about the health benefits and usage of millets. We do many activities and events to bring millets back to the tables of consumers like conducting cooking workshops & undertaking millet based catering and tasting sessions. We are also working on curating traditional as well as contemporary millet recipes of all cuisines. Our vision is to re-introduce millets as mainstream foods and give them their rightful place in the Indian context, by increasing access as well as awareness, on their health benefits & many delicious ways in which they can be easily included in our diets.
