Imprisoned Motherhood: Motherhood and Childhood in Indian Prisons

Greetings from Centre for Laws on Gender and Sexuality, Research Cell DME

CLGS is organizing a Panel Discussion on 19th April, 2022 at 3 PM. The discussion will be focused on the status of children of convicted women in the prisons and the idea of rehabilitation of such mothers and children outside in the society. The documentary "Born Behind Bars" will be the vivid source of the discussion.

Criminal Law has always been extremely wary of women as mothers. Motherhood, even in its absence, has been the backdrop of culpability in cases of female criminals. However, once the guilt is established and sentence is imposed, these mothers seemingly vanish before the Law and State. Through this panel discussion, we hope to understand the plight of the “criminal mothers” and the shadow of their sentencing on the children.

The session is being organised in a Virtual mode via Zoom Platform.

Panelist:- Sugandha Shakar, Senior Programme Officer, Prison Reforms, CHRI

Malati Rao, Director, “Born Behind Bars”

Date - 19th April, 2022
Time - 3 PM

The Inaugural session of the International Conference on Transgender Identity and Rights in South Asia kick started today as a sure step towards decentralising academia.

Let's head to cities beyond the political centres and their academic circles because such discussions on Transgender Identity and Rights need to happen everywhere. Because caste, class and gender privileges blind us equally regardless of our geographical locations.

We would like to thank Nishant Upadhyay, Vaibhav Saria and Nicci Take for gracing our Inaugural Ceremony.
