Qingdao Port has officially put China’s first vacuum-type automatic mooring system into operation at its fully automated container terminal. The system secures large container vessels using high-power vacuum suction and intelligent positioning, eliminating the need for workers to handle mooring lines.

With 13 mooring units generating a total suction force of 2,600 kN, the system can accommodate the world’s largest container ships. Mooring time has been reduced from 20–30 minutes to less than 30 seconds, significantly improving safety, efficiency, and berth utilization.

The system integrates multi-sensor perception, intelligent decision-making, and real-time monitoring of wind, waves, and currents. Its deployment marks a major milestone in China’s smart port development and further strengthens Qingdao Port’s position as a global leader in automated and green port technologies.
