PDP Vice President Mohd Sartaj Madni Condemns Alleged Police Action in Devsar, Says Rights Cannot Be Silenced by Force
Devsar, Kulgam 5 August: Today they beat us; tomorrow, their own children may stand where we stand.
August 5 is not the struggle of one party or one group. It is a struggle for our rights, our dignity, our political voice, and the future of generations to come.
Today, PDP supporters are allegedly being beaten for raising their voices. But those holding the batons should remember that tomorrow, it may be their own children standing on the streets, demanding the very same rights and asking why their parents chose force over justice.
What happened in Devsar, Kulgam, deserves the strongest condemnation. The police are not above the law, and a uniform is not a licence to silence citizens through violence. This alleged police high-handedness cannot be normalised, justified, or brushed aside.
The present dispensation in Jammu & Kashmir cannot escape responsibility by remaining silent. Its failure to ensure accountability has created an environment where alleged police excesses appear to go unchecked. When those entrusted with protecting citizens are allowed to use force with impunity, the responsibility does not end with the officer holding the baton; it extends to the administration that fails to act, investigate, and hold those responsible accountable.
Perhaps the expectation is that fear will erase questions and force will end resistance. How convenient. But rights do not disappear because people are beaten, and history does not forget who stood with the people and who raised a baton against them.
This is not only about PDP supporters. It concerns every person in Jammu & Kashmir, whether they are being beaten today or holding the baton today.
Remember, the future belongs to our children. The rights denied today may be the very rights they are forced to fight for tomorrow.

*Mohd Sartaj Madni Condemns Alleged Police Action Against PDP Workers During Peaceful Protest in Devsar Former Mc President Mushtaq Ah bhat*
Devsar, Aug 5 People's Democratic Party (PDP) Vice President Mohd Sartaj Madni strongly condemned the alleged police action against PDP workers Aqib Ah mir, Mohd Amin Ganie & other's and Former Mc President Mushtaq Ah bhat arrested during the party's peaceful protest in Devsar, terming the incident a "serious assault on democratic rights and civil liberties."
In a strongly worded statement, Madni alleged that police personnel used force against peaceful protesters, assaulted several PDP workers, and snatched their mobile phones and protest banners in an attempt to disrupt the demonstration. He described the alleged actions as "high-handed, unjustified and unacceptable" in a democratic society.
Madni said the PDP has always upheld the principles of peaceful and democratic protest and has consistently raised public issues through constitutional means. He maintained that the August 5 protest was organized peacefully to reiterate the party's long-standing demand for the restoration of Articles 370 and 35A, besides seeking the release of prisoners.
"The right to peaceful protest is a fundamental democratic right. Suppressing peaceful political activity through force and intimidation is deeply unfortunate and raises serious concerns about the shrinking democratic space in Jammu and Kashmir," he said.
He alleged that instead of allowing a peaceful demonstration, the authorities resorted to intimidation and unnecessary use of force against unarmed political workers. Such actions, he said, undermine public confidence in democratic institutions and are inconsistent with the values guaranteed under the Constitution.
Madni urged the administration to conduct a fair and impartial inquiry into the alleged incident, hold those responsible accountable if wrongdoing is established, and ensure that the democratic rights of political workers and ordinary citizens are fully protected. He asserted that the PDP would continue to raise the people's issues through peaceful and democratic means despite such alleged attempts to silence dissent.
