“Dr Guru N Reddy with other Doyens of healthcare“ sing the National Anthem….
As we celebrate our republic day and applaud the strength of our Republic in its diversity, religion, language, culture and spirituality, it is important to keep the citizens of this nation healthy. All stakeholders need to commit and look beyond the chaos of our healthcare systems and strive to seek solutions. We cannot afford to constantly blame each other and undermine our incredible strengths. There are many bright spots in our healthcare often unseen due to an overwhelming slate of dark perceptions. I ask a very relevant question, “Who owns an individual's health“. I believe a rational debate on this engaging all the stakeholders and the citizens of our country will help to unravel many answers without emotion and perhaps help to lessen the distrust of our doctors, hospitals, insurance companies, nurses and the government. I believe strongly, lack of clarity on the ownership of an individual's health is the single most important driver in our misunderstandings. So let’s start this discussion on this republic day in securing our health as citizens and work towards a healthy nation.

Houstonia Magazine Honors Local Gastroenterologist for the 4th Consecutive Year
Dr. Guru N Reddy once again recognized as one of Houston’s “Top Docs.”
NEWS CENTER (PRWEB) December 06, 2017
Dr. Guru N Reddy, founding gastroenterologist and Hepatologist at Digestive and Liver Disease Consultants, PA, recently accepted his 4th consecutive Top Docs award from Houstonia Magazine.
Every year, Houstonia uses a peer survey (doctors evaluating other doctors) to nominate and identify the doctors the medical community recognizes for excellence in their fields. Dr. Reddy is one of 17 gastroenterologists to make this year’s list, which consists of 580 Houston-area doctors in total.
In addition to running his practice, Reddy is an active member of many boards, associations, and research councils and international health organizations.
“I am greatly honored by the confidence my peers have placed in me,” says Reddy. “I’m excited to continue working with the broader medical community to ensure all our patients receive the highest possible standards of care. Houston stands out as a place where residents can find some of the best doctors in the world, and I’m proud to be considered one of them.”
Reddy is recognized worldwide as one of the premier experts on liver disease, GI diseases and Endoscopy care. In addition to founding Digestive and Liver Disease Consultants, PA, North Houston Endoscopy and Surgery, launched Continental Hospitals in Hyderabad, India, with the hopes of bringing top-notch disease care back to his home town. Continental Hospitals began winning prestigious awards and accreditations just one year after opening their doors.
“I just stay busy,” driven by passion and integrity, Reddy admits. “No resting on my laurels. The awards are nice, but there’s always more work to be done.”

Dr. Guru N Reddy Continues to Educate Physicians on the Importance of EHRs
NEWS CENTER (PRWEB) NOVEMBER 16, 2017
Dr. Guru N Reddy has been an advocate of electronic health record (EHR) systems for a long time. As the health care landscape continues to shift, so too does this award-winning doctor continue to educate his colleagues on the benefits of abandoning paper health records.
Some patients must visit multiple specialists to achieve wellness. EHRs allow various practices to seamlessly exchange clinical data. This allows physicians to improve their quality of care by increasing communication across the multiple sites and specialties. Legislators favor the use of EHR technology as well, providing many incentives to the physicians who choose to embrace this technology.
EHR systems have been available for nearly two decades, but some physicians continue to rely on paper records. The cost of implementation serves as one barrier to adopting this technology. Uncertainty as to whether the EHR will truly serve the practice’s needs serves as another barrier. Reddy points out web-based EHRs can serve as a cost-effective alternative to a full installation, but stresses that physicians should prioritize functionality over price.
“EHRs are especially important in our volatile industry, because they allow physicians to demonstrate their quality of care to government agencies and insurance providers,” says Reddy. “Implementing one can help ensure a medical practice survives no matter what our nation’s leaders choose to do about the future of health care.”
Other advantages of these systems include reduction of expenses, more accurate billing and coding and the ability to access real-time patient information at multiple locations. Further with the Governments mandated quality indicators and other reporting parameters in the coming years EMR/ EHR will become all the more important in data collecting for such reporting.
Reddy has been touting the benefits of those systems for over 17 years.
“I am passionate about advocating for any method which has proven itself to be an effective tool in the quest to achieve the best possible patient outcomes”, he says.
Dr. Reddy stresses: electronic health records are one of the greatest assets in navigating an ever-changing health system.
"EHRs are especially important in our volatile industry, because they allow physicians to demonstrate their quality of care to government agencies and insurance providers."
Dr. Gurunath Reddy Fights HAI Rates Across Two Continents.
Award-winning physician makes major strides against Hospital Associated Infections
HOUSTON, TX (PRWEB) OCTOBER 26, 2017
To Dr. Gurunath Reddy, nothing short of a 0% HAI (Hospital Acquired Infection) rate will do. And if perfection isn’t possible, he’ll get as close as he can – both for patients in his adopted Houston home state of over 30 years, and for patients in his home town in Hyderabad, India.
In 2013, Dr. Reddy as Chairman at Continental Hospitals in Hyderabad, India brought significant changes to Healthcare in India. Thanks to Reddy’s focus on quality, design and patient service it became the first hospital in India in less than two years of operations to win JCI (Joint Commission International) accreditation, considered the “Gold standard” in global health care. Continental is also the first multi-specialty hospital in the world to achieve JCI accreditation in less than two years. Low HAI rates were critical to achieving this prestigious recognition: the hospital managed a 0% Surgical Site Infection Rate and a negligible HAI rate after performing over 3,000 major surgeries over a two-year period.
Dr. Reddy continues his mission to provide high-quality, affordable care, refusing to compromise on any safety standards.
“I can’t stress this enough,” says Reddy. “Strictly following both national and international standards in health care is non-negotiable to me. HAIs are both unnecessary and unacceptable, and I’m going to continue to work to stamp them out.”

Health Checks and "The Truth"- It is amusing to see almost everyday a bewildering array of "Health Check" package advertisements from health care providers, hospitals and other entities, continuously soliciting the public. The wage of price war of these packages out in the public is all the more interesting. One size fits all, cheaper the better, devoid of evidence based battery of tests approach of these packages smudges the medical profession and hurts many innocent doctors who care for their patients. The practice of medicine is an art based on science and the art of medicine is a servant to science and this cannot be replaced.
Health Check packages need to be carefully constructed for different ages, gender, risk factors, family history of diseases, lifestyle, inheritable diseases, cancer risk and anymore. There is no distinct publication in world's literature that a catalog of blood tests and a few other throw in tests called as a health check saves life or reduces an individuals risk.
At Continental hospitals we have designed 21 different packages based on best available medical evidence to guide the public properly and the most appealing aspect of these packages is emphasis on "Preventive health" and not just a "health check". This is done by our superbly qualified doctors and not machines.
So exercise a judicious mind in understanding the benefits of your package and its value. "Truth always grows and evolves over time". And all of us at Continental will be patient for this recognition by you.
Continental Hospitals Heart center embraces "Lean management "principles of Toyota Motor Corp., for the first time in the city of Hyderabad and the state of Andhra Pradesh for better delivery of cardiac care to patients and lower death rates from heart attacks.
The lean approach is rooted in the management philosophy known as the Toyota Production System. As applied to cardiac care of patients lean management leads to practices such as 1. standardization of admission order sets for patients presenting with chest pain, 2. promptly alerting the cardiac catheterization(cath lab) team when an acute heart attack is evident on the EKG, 3. immediate availability of cardiologists to perform diagnostic and therapeutic percutaneous coronary interventions in less than 2 hours, 5. Regular monitoring of clinical processes and 6. preparing and adhering to multiple check lists.
Why lean management when only 10% of US hospitals interventional cardiology units have succeeded in recent years? As a physician and administrator I have applied lean principles in every health care delivery process and have been highly successful. Because "Lean" as a methodology talks about value versus waste, and how do you see in your daily work where there's value in those things that are good for patients versus where there's waste, e.g., wasting time in trying to find people, wasting time to find equipment, waiting to locate your cardiologists, wasting time making errors and correcting errors.
As soon as we opened our Cath lab this week a phenomenal place, several patients already underwent their diagnostic and interventional procedures successfully. because of our lean management systems fully operational our patients were not only complimentary but applauded our vision. Led by Dr Sreenivas Kumar, Chief of Interventional cardiology who has done thousands of these procedures including serving on international faculty and research teams, distinguishes along with his colleagues Continental Heart Center as one of the finest, technologcially advanced and exquisitely designed labs in the world. He poignantly reflects " that world class care is brought to our patients today". As said before Continental's journey with its outstanding doctors in every speciality is the inflection point in India's healthcare today. Thus Healthcare Redefined.
