At a recent student gathering, a thought provoking question arose: How do we define an artist? Is it based on conventional practices, a few specific skills, or a broader approach?

During discussions with fellow students, we discovered varied perspectives on what constitutes an artist. Many agreed that an artist is someone who shares their work. This journey can start in local settings, like schools or cafés, and evolve into exhibitions in galleries or even international biennales.

However, does showcasing your work truly define you as an artist? Can one be an artist without being exhibited, published, or collected? An artist might also be someone who practices their craft, be it performance art, painting, or mentorship, without adhering to traditional outputs.

Ultimately, our conversation led us to a comforting conclusion: being labeled an artist doesn't solely rely on public recognition or commercial success. Art is about expressing our inner voice. If you choose to share your work, that’s your decision; if you don’t, it doesn’t diminish your identity as an artist. What truly matters is the passion behind the practice, not the accolades or market validation.

What should you ask an artist? (By the way, this is not limited to painters.) As non-creative practitioners, we often find ourselves curious about the intricate thoughts behind their art. While the outcome may seem clear, the process involves a complex interplay of environment, emotional turmoil, and sometimes even numbness or frustration.

Artists are driven by diverse motivations, but true reflection lies in their honesty toward their craft. It transcends mere output, fame, or financial gain; it’s about what genuinely inspires them. Is their work rooted in the pursuit of beauty, or are they addressing a more profound issue? Do they explore themes of poetry, human experience, suffering, or social commentary?

Engaging with an artist about these deeper layers can unveil the rich emotional landscape that fuels their creativity, providing a glimpse into the heart of their practice. By asking the right questions, one can better understand the profound connections between their experiences and their output.
