More than 1.79 lakh JEE Advanced 2026 candidates may have had their personal information exposed after a cloud storage system linked to IIT Roorkee's examination portal was reportedly left publicly accessible.

According to reports, the exposed database contained nearly 1.79 lakh result records and around 1.87 lakh admit card PDFs. The information allegedly included names, dates of birth, mobile numbers, marks, ranks, and other candidate details. The issue was flagged by Rylen Anil, a 16-year-old cybersecurity researcher, who highlighted the exposure on X (formerly Twitter). Following the disclosure, IIT Roorkee acknowledged the exposure and said corrective measures were being taken.

Amid the controversy, the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) has demanded the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, calling the alleged breach a serious failure in safeguarding students' personal information and raising concerns over data security in India's education system.

What started as a 17-year-old student's attempt to understand problems in CBSE's evaluation system eventually reached Parliament.

Sarthak Sidhant first began digging into CBSE's newly introduced On-Screen Marking (OSM) system after concerns emerged over issues such as blurred answer sheets, re-evaluation challenges, and declining pass rates. Rather than stopping at questions about the results, he spent days examining publicly available procurement records, tender documents, and contract details linked to CBSE's β‚Ή384.6 crore OSM project.

Using coding, data analysis, and extensive document research, Sarthak claimed to have uncovered at least 15 discrepancies across multiple rounds of the tender process. His findings pointed to alleged changes in eligibility criteria, modifications to turnover and past-performance requirements, and the removal of clauses that could have disqualified vendors with a history of poor performance or blacklisting. He also highlighted the background of the winning bidder, Coempt EduTeck, and raised questions about how the contract was awarded.

What began as an independent investigation by a Class 12 student soon became a national issue. His findings drew attention from students, educators, policymakers, and political leaders. The 17-year-old was subsequently invited to present his analysis before the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Education, bringing a student-led inquiry into the national spotlight. The matter also prompted the Education Ministry to seek a detailed report from CBSE on the OSM evaluation process.

Whether the allegations are ultimately upheld or rejected, the episode has demonstrated how curiosity, persistence, and careful analysis of public records can raise important questions about transparency and accountability in public institutions.

The investigation into the CBSE On-Screen Marking (OSM) controversy has expanded, with Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan seeking a detailed report on the issue. The minister is also reviewing the contract awarded for the digital evaluation process as concerns surrounding the implementation of the new marking system come under greater scrutiny.

The controversy erupted after several Class 12 students alleged discrepancies in their evaluated answer sheets following CBSE's first-time adoption of the On-Screen Marking system. Complaints ranged from missing scanned pages and answer-sheet mismatches to alleged marking errors, triggering a nationwide debate over the transparency and reliability of the digital evaluation process.

While CBSE has defended the system and said corrective measures are being taken where required, the Ministry of Education is examining both the technical implementation and the processes followed during the evaluation. The episode has put CBSE's digital assessment framework under the spotlight and raised broader questions about accountability, quality control and student grievance redressal in board examinations.
