Enchey Monastery in Gangtok is steeped in legend ð. One story says it was blessed by a ta***ic master who predicted itâd bring prosperity to Sikkim. The name âEncheyâ means âsolitary houseâ - fitting for a monastery built in a secluded spot.
Itâs also got a sacred spring inside the complex thatâs said to have healing powers. Locals believe the water can cure illnesses, so you often see people collecting it in small bottles.
The architecture blends Tibetan and Sikkimese styles - check out the wood carvings and frescoes inside. Plus, itâs one of the few places where you can see traditional Nyingma sect rituals.
Would you want to know more about its festivals, like the annual Pang Lhabsol? Or maybe the trek routes around it?
M G Marg in the evening is like a whole different world ð! The street lights up, shops bustle, and with the no-honking rule, you can actually hear the live music and laughter. Itâs the perfect mix of chill and energy - locals strolling, street food smells, and the mountains looming in the background.
Itâs like the heart of Gangtok, where everyone comes to hang out after a day of sightseeing. You get the best food, best people-watching, and zero traffic chaos despite it being a main spot. Plus, the prayer flags fluttering around add a nice touch.
Gangtokâs traffic rules stand out because they actually try to match the cityâs geography instead of copying generic city rules.
What works well:
No Honking zones: As you noticed, it cuts noise a lot in a hill town where sound echoes. Fines are enforced, especially around schools, hospitals, and MG Marg. Makes walking way more pleasant.
One-way system in the core: Most of the main bazaar and MG Marg area is pedestrian-only or strict one-way for vehicles. Keeps the narrow roads from complete gridlock during tourist season.
Odd-even or timing restrictions: During peak season they sometimes regulate tourist vehicles and taxis by time slots to prevent choking the uphill roads.
Strict parking: Parking is limited and enforced. Random parking on curves is ticketed because itâs genuinely dangerous on those bends.
Challenges:
The roads are narrow and steep, so even with rules, jams happen when 2 vehicles meet on a blind turn.
Enforcement can be inconsistent once you get outside the main town area.
Tourists not used to hill driving sometimes struggle with lane discipline.
Bottom line: Gangtokâs rules feel more thoughtful than most Indian cities because theyâre designed for hills, not flat highways. The âno hornâ rule + pedestrian focus gives it a calmer vibe that matches Sikkimâs whole clean-and-green image.
If drivers keep following it like you saw in East Sikkim, it makes driving there less stressful than in most hill stations. Have you driven there yourself, or were you mostly walking around and watching traffic?
That sounds peaceful. Enchey Monastery in Gangtok is one of those places where you really feel the calm - 200-year-old monastery perched on a hilltop, prayer wheels spinning, and the sound of lamas chanting.
When lamas are praying there, youâll usually hear the deep rumble of the dungchen - those long horns - mixed with bells, drums, and mantra recitation. They often do prayers for protection of the town and for auspicious events. Visitors are welcome to sit quietly and observe, as long as you keep silence and walk clockwise around the prayer wheels.
Did you get to see the prayer ceremony up close? The morning puja there is especially serene, with the whole valley below and mist rolling in.
