Often, candidates may wonder why they don't get shortlisted for the second round of an interview after the first round.

Here are the reasons why candidates may not be shortlisted:

1. The candidate may have poor communication skills and not be able to explain their background, educational qualifications, and skills in the best possible way.

2. The candidate may not pay attention to small details that are mentioned in the interview. Hence, the recruiter may feel that the candidate will not perform the tasks allocated to them if the candidate is hired, and hence, is not the right individual for a job role.

The two unwritten rules for candidates appearing for interviews are to avoid excessive humour (it may show that you are not taking the interview process seriously) and overconfidence (overconfidence shows that you may not actually be knowledgeable about the job and are pretending to be knowledgeable).

Here are some career mistakes that one should avoid:

1. Not taking responsibility is a major mistake, and it is only by fulfilling tasks that a person learns on the job.

2. Not networking harms career growth as a person is not able to learn from the experience of other professionals.

3. Not making decisions that help your career grow is a mistake. For example, a professional may decide to apply for the role of a sales manager after working as a business development executive for many years.

4. Not upskilling is a major mistake one should always avoid. A job should be more than the monetary compensation and one should learn new skills (soft skills/work-related skills) to perform their tasks better.

While recruiting, ensure that the candidate you hire is able to perform well in the job role. The cost of hiring someone bad is high as they will not be able to deliver the required output that is expected and will be a cost for the business. Moreover, the organisation will have to spend time searching for a new candidate for the job role.

One tip candidates must remember is to schedule interviews at the time and date when they are available. Cancelling an interview at a later stage shows unprofessionalism and interviewers may form a negative opinion of the candidate in their mind.
