In 2025, the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine was awarded to Mary E. Brunkow, Fred Ramsdell, and Shimon Sakaguchi for their important discovery about how our immune system avoids attacking our own body.
They studied a special kind of white blood cells called regulatory T cells (or T-regs). These cells act like brakes — they help stop the immune system from mistakenly harming healthy tissues.
The scientists also found a gene called FOXP3, which is essential for these T-regs to work properly. When FOXP3 is mutated or not working, autoimmune diseases can arise (where the body attacks itself).
Their discovery is very important because it gives scientists a clearer understanding of autoimmune diseases, organ transplantation, and how to design treatments that regulate the immune system without harming it.
