Shishu Mandir is a Bangalore-based NGO that works for disadvantaged children through its home, school and vocational centre. Shishu Mandir is also a licensed adoption agency.
Founded by Hella Mundhra in 1983 as a children's home, Shishu Mandir is an NGO that offers a comprehensive support system with a free school, vocational training and higher education. The entire community, where the Shishu children come from, is supported through various welfare projects in order to allow the children to develop to the best of their abilities and also as a way of igniting hope within the communities. Shishu Mandir is registered as a Society in India and runs entirely on donations. Thus far, financial support has been received through fundraising activities in India and Germany. The number of beneficiaries has reached 530 on a daily basis, which is comparatively small number, but in tune with the organisation's focus on providing high quality support to a few rather than superficial support to many. Shishu Mandir is based near KR Puram at Bangalore, reaching out to 12 villages in the vicinity. There are 45,000 residents in this area out of whom 47% live below the poverty line (BPL), which is defined as income of less than Rs 750 per person per month. If you would like to volunteer at Shishu Mandir, make a donation or find out how you can help, please message us on this page. If you would rather call, then please contact Divya at 72590 00198 or email [email protected].
Operating as usual
The Shishu Mandir Vocational College offers an opportunity to youth who seek employable skills. Details of the 4 and 6-month courses are attached here.
One of our community projects is house construction. Where families have a small plot of land but no resources to build a strong house, Shishu Mandir steps in to assist. In the past, we have had volunteers come in to help with this project. Some of the houses we have constructed use interesting ideas to improve ventilation and light within a small space. As our 42nd house, we completed the construction of a house for the family of our student, Dhanush. The celebratory ribbon cutting was done by the by the family of Christbin, who were in Bangalore to take him home.
We now have a professional-sized basketball court at our Children's Home. This court was inagurated by the CEO of Arctern Company and his team. The inauguration was followed by a friendly match between two of our own teams. The excitement of having the court continues - more recently, Devan, our sports trainer organised a dawn to dusk basketball tournaments with 8 teams!
The Aero India show has always been a favorite with our children and we have had the good fortune of a supporter who ensures our children get to see the amazing display. It's a big deal because it's yet another window to possibility and opportunities. Four years ago, Princy Josephine was among the group that went to see the air show. When she returned, she told her science teacher that she'd like to be an aerospace engineer. It took guts and courage among other things but today she is already studying to be an engineer. We see this photograph of the girls watching the aeroplanes. And we wonder what dreams may have found wings.
The Shishu Mandir Lego team in Delhi. After a successful run at the Regionals in Chennai where they were runner ups, the team, accompanied by Miss Stella Delvi, were in Delhi earlier this month. They came 8th among the 26 teams that participated, and returned richer for the experience. Kudos to the children.
Our Shishu children need plenty of personal attention, for they come from difficult, challenging backgrounds and carry deep wounds from the lives they lead. Which is why Shishu Mandir is more than just a school. It is a place of refuge, where the children have a chance at enjoying their childhood, and one that holds the hope for a future to look forward to.
This video features our very talented children. It was shot at our school over one day, made possible because of the energy and enthusiasm from both staff and students.
We rely on your donations and support to keep going. So if you would like to help out in any way or would like to volunteer to spend some time with our children, please message us on our page.
And do share our video. Thank you!
At Shishu Mandir, we teach our children that men and women are equal, that people are equal, no matter where they come from or how much money they have. #NationalGirlChildDay
