Don't ignore newborns with persistent yellowness of the body !!!
A lot of newborns develop jaundice in the first few days after birth. Jaundice is the yellow discoloration of the eyes and the body. This type of early jaundice, also known as "Physiological Jaundice," usually settles down in 15 days. In some kids, the yellowness may persist longer and this is a reason to worry. A condition called EHBA or Extra-hepatic biliary atresia is a common cause of persistent jaundice. EHBA is due to faulty development of bile ducts in the liver due to which the bile produced by the liver cannot pass into the intestines. A surgery known as Kasai's portoenterostomy, needs to be done urgently within the first 60 days. Kids who do not get diagnosed with this disease continue to have persistent jaundice and land up with liver failure in the next few months. At this stage of liver failure, only a Liver Transplant can give them long term survival. For young parents in India with a new family, funding a transplant can be challenging. Our ILC Foundation runs an affordable transplant initative helping kids get liver transplants. Hazel and Daya had liver failure due to Extrahepatic Biliary Atresia and recieved liver transplants as part of this initiative. Two years after their successful surgery, they continue to live and grow like normal kids. May God bless all the donors from all over the country who have contributed for these surgeries.

MEDICAL INNOVATION "Brush Strokes"
Children who experience chronic medical conditions like chronic liver disease and liver cirrhosis and undergo major surgery like Liver Transplantation, share a need to express how they feel. For such children, art has been shown to make a massive difference in their recovery. The Integrated Liver Care Foundation in association with Aster CMI Hospital, Bangalore collaborated with some of the finest young artists in the country to present "Rang" an art therapy session for children. Artist Praveen Kumar and his team conducted an interactive painting and drawing session and taught children different ways to express themselves through various creative tasks.

High fructose in diet usually in sweetened beverage drinks and foods containing High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS) has been associated with the development of fatty liver in adults and children. Use of sweetened fruit juices, carbonated sweet beverages and food containing HFCS should be curtailed as much as possible. ‘‘Apicius, the great Roman Chef, made the discovery in the 1st century AD, that it was possible to make fatty liver (foie gras) in goose by feeding them dried figs and dates which were a rich source of fructose, and then drenching them with wine mixed with honey"

Now we are discovering that fatty liver in adults and children may be related to the excessive intake of sugars especially fructose that is found in sugary beverages. Watch out for our detailed review on this topic ...........

Nurses are the real force behind the recovery of patients. It is we, physicians, who know how inefficient our therapies would be, were there no good and dedicated nurses. On our page, I would like to thank all the wonderful nurses who work in our team and as part of our Liver Transplant Program. We wish you all the success in your careers and your life. Each one of you is a Florence Nightingale.

This is another one of our champions. Broke his hand while playing cricket. Nothing can stop him from freaking out, playing and enjoying with his friends. He wants up to grow and design concept cars. Oh yes, he also had a liver transplant a year ago and then a few endoscopies and then another surgery to sort out a narrowed bile duct. But now all that is history. His life is on track. He gets no concessions from his mom, who donated part of her liver to make sure that this amazing kid will grow up like anyone else. In the group picture, you can see our young master (on his birthday) with two other kids who had liver transplants at the same time. To his right is his Mother.
